Summary

A Vacancy at Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.


The post-holder will be responsible for providing strong and visible nursing leadership to all areas of the Trust that support the delivery of systemic anti-cancer therapies.

The role will work alongside the Chemotherapy Lead Consultant to ensure that all staff involved in delivery of SACT provide a high quality, evidence based, safe and effective service. The post-holder will be instrumental in leading the SACT strategies for the organisation and for service delivery, policy development and service improvement across our range SACT services for patients with both haematological and solid malignancies.

The post-holder will provide clinical expertise in line with national and local policy and will be the ambassador for the organisation working with the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre and the Strategic Clinical Network chemotherapy group to ensure that practice is responsive to changing technology and patient / service.

The post-holder will work with key personnel in the organisation to ensure that the SACT service meets the requirements of Improving Outcomes Guidance in relation to chemotherapy services.

The role will be based in cancer services. It will support the SACT services on Lilac Centre (ambulatory / day-case SACT facility), Ward 2 A (level 2 b inpatient unit for haematology) and the Satchi Suite (haematology day case unit).

Working across and between St Helens and Whiston Hospitals, the post holder will foster a positive learning environment for staff to work in; ensuring high standards of patient care are maintained and that the patient remains the central focus. Excellent communication skills, a good knowledge of clinical standards and a range of clinical skills including chemotherapy administration and the management of treatment related toxicities are important.

The role involves providing leadership and support to staff, delivery of holistic care, promoting awareness and education of oncology issues and supporting patients and their families during a critical time in their cancer care. The role will involve having excellent managerial and organisational skills to help care for patients receiving chemotherapy or other supportive treatments; working alongside our medical oncology and haematology teams.

The Secretary of State has approved the partnership between St Helens & Knowsley and Southport & Ormskirk Hospitals.

KEY DUTIES

Clinical Practice
• Lead the development of an effective operational policy for the SACT service
• Facilitate the development of the chemotherapy service across oncology and haematology including repatriation of patients for oncology chemotherapy and supportive care
• Work across the Trust to perform comprehensive assessment of patient needs and evaluate care delivery according to changing health care needs
• Carry out holistic assessment of patients
• Perform formal history taking and physical assessments
• Provide a non-medical prescribing function within the scope of the non-medical prescribing policyfor the Trust and within the scope of own permitted formulary
• Support the patient and actively involve them in discussing treatment options to enable informed consent and decision making
• Deliver very difficult news to patients and families with sensitivity and respect.
• Act as a role model and an influential change agent
• Review patients and initiate changes in management of care, where appropriate,
• Provide and maintain expert knowledge and practice in venepuncture, cannulation, use central venous access devices (including PICC’s) and delivery of chemotherapy drugs
• Work autonomously and act as the patient advocate, through the application of ethical, legal and professional knowledge and skills
• Ensure effective use of advanced nursing knowledge and skills, relating to the speciality in order to enhance delivery of patient care Develop and utilise nursing interventions deemed beneficial to patient care e.g. Telephone clinics, face to face nurse led clinics aimed at improving services for patients and their families.
• Work collaboratively with other professionals and agencies to ensure patient needs are met, especially in relation to ongoing care needs and discharge arrangements
