Newham in Plaistow is a busy district hospital and part of Barts Health NHS Trust, which is the largest trust in the NHS. It was created on 1 April 2012 by bringing together three trusts: Barts and The London NHS Trust, Newham University Hospital NHS Trust and Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust. The London Borough of Newham serves a population of over 348,000. It has one of the youngest and most ethnically diverse populations in the country.

Although the hospital is relatively small, it has a high turnover of patients and there is a lot of pathology. This offers excellent experience of a wide range of acute and chronic conditions with varying degrees of complexity. We are very interactive & supportive and like to teach. We have an excellent reputation for offering high standards of training for all grades of junior doctor in practical procedures and outpatient clinics. There is teaching on a weekly basis in the form of journal clubs and medical grand rounds in addition to upper GI cancer and hepatobiliary/viral hepatitis/IBD MDT meetings, which the junior doctors can attend. A lot of our juniors have gone on to become Specialist Registrars in Gastroenterology and our aim is to help the doctor achieve whatever goals they wish to attain.

Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country, and one of Britain's leading healthcare providers.
The Barts Health group of NHS hospitals is entering an exciting new era on our improvement journey to becoming an outstanding organisation with a world-class clinical reputation. Having lifted ourselves out of special measures, we now have the impetus and breathing space to chart a fresh course in which we are continually striving to improve all our services for patients.
Our vision is to be a high-performing group of NHS hospitals, renowned for excellence and innovation, and providing safe and compassionate care to our patients in east London and beyond. That means being a provider of excellent patient safety, known for delivering consistently high standards of harm-free care and always caring for patients in the right place at the right time. It also means being an outstanding place to work, in which our We Care values and behaviours are visible to all and guide us in how we work together.
We strive to live by our We Care values and are committed to promoting inclusion, where every staff member has a sense of belonging. We value our differences and fully advocate, cultivate and support an inclusive working environment where staff treat one another with dignity and respect. We aim to create an equitable working environment where every individual can fulfil their potential.

There is a dedicated bi-weekly ascites clinic which is managed by junior doctors (but consultant supervised), where they learn to perform paracentesis. If the successful candidate would like to learn how to endoscope, then there is a fully functional Symbionix endoscopy simulator that they can be trained. In addition, there are upper GI cancer and hepatobiliary, viral hepatitis and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) MDT meetings, which the junior doctors can attend. In addition, the post holder will be allocated a clinical and educational supervisor and take part in audit and quality improvement projects. If they would like to pursue a career in medicine, then we can help them accomplish all the competencies for the alternate certificate for IMT training.
