Summary


This is a full-time consultant in general medicine with an interest in respiratory medicine and a sub-specialty interest interstitial lung disease. The successful applicants will collaborate closely with the present team of nine employed across the whole Trust, which includes the Lister Hospital in Stevenage, the New QEII Hospital in Welwyn Garden City and Hertford County Hospital in Hertford. This post has arisen as it was previous covered by a fixed term appointment. The appointee will be based at the Lister Hospital, Stevenage where the respiratory in-patients has been centralised but will be expected to work at the sites within the Trust including the New QEII hospital at Welwyn Garden city and Hertford County Hospital at Hertford.

The appointee will be expected to augment the services provided by the department. The department provides a respiratory service 7 days a week and the applicant will be involved in 7 days working. S/He will be part of the General Medical Team of consultants and be expected to participate in the medical on call Rota. The present chest physicians are enthusiastic and determined to build an excellent department. There is a substantial Respiratory Nurse Specialist Group, full Endoscopy services, Sleep Unit and an expanding Lung Function Unit.

Provision with Consultant colleagues of a service to East and North Herts NHS Trust, with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department.

Out-of-hours responsibilities, including participation in consultant medical on-call Rota where applicable; Participation of the respiratory 7-day working Rota.

Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences.

Any responsibility which relates to a special interest.

Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.

Responsibilities for conducting teaching, examination and accreditation duties as required and for contributing to undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing medical education activity, locally and nationally.

Participating in medical audit, the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes and in CPD.

Involvement in research.

Managerial, including budgetary, responsibilities where appropriate.

A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels.

The post is full time based at the Lister Hospital, but the post holder will be expected to attend QE2 and HCH for clinics and bronchoscopy.

When Respiratory of Week (ROW), the consultant is entirely ward based with other clinical duties cancelled. There will be a daily consultant review of the respiratory ward seven days a week which will include the RSU at weekends. During the weekdays, the ROW is purely ward base but at the weekend will support ACT seeing respiratory patients as required. During the weekend, the consultant will have the support of the respiratory nurse specialist for ACT and a trainee from the team for the ward. The objectives are:
• To provide specialist respiratory advice to acutely unwell respiratory patients
• To facilitate early discharge or prevent admission of respiratory patients where
appropriate
• To ensure respiratory patients benefit from specialist input when managed on an
outlying ward.
• Daily ward round of 11A and the RSU
