Summary

A Vacancy at East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust.

An opportunity has arisen to join our team at Colchester Hospital to support the opening of the newEssex and Suffolk Elective Orthopaedic Centre (ESEOC)

The Essex and Suffolk Elective Orthopaedic Centre (ESEOC) is due to open in October 2024, in the brand new £64million Dame Clare Marx Building (DCMB) on the Colchester site. The DCMB will have eight operating theatres and three wards dedicated to elective orthopaedic surgery, making it one of the largest units of its kind in Europe. ESEOC will serve patients from across Suffolk and Essex with the potential for 10,000 cases per annum.

ESNEFT has been successful in gaining accreditation as a regional hub for revision knee surgery and is aiming to become a major regional centre for hip revision surgery as the network develops.

We are inviting applications for full time consultant posts in anaesthetics. Applicants with a special interest in orthopaedic anaesthesia are particularly sought but we will equally consider those with other areas of specialist interest.

These jobs will have an on-call commitment at Colchester Hospital, but elective work can be job planned at Ipswich or Colchester, depending on the applicant’s interests.

Our Enhanced Welcome package includes an additional £20,000 and relocation costs to thank you for choosing to work at our Trust and your new journey with ESNEFT.

The post-holder’s duties will be to support the expansion of elective orthopaedic surgery in ESEOC on the Colchester site. The on call will be at Colchester Hospital and we anticipate that most of the elective work will be job planned at Colchester. Cross-site working (at Ipswich) can be organised, depending on the interests of the applicants.

The new appointee will participate in their share of consultant clinical responsibilities within the department, which will include fixed or flexible operating theatre sessions and participation in the out of hours on-call rota. A sample timetable is included later in this document.

The post-holder will participate in the general and obstetric on-call rota, with a frequency of 1:16. These on calls also cover out of hours vascular emergencies.

Consultants on call are resident from 5-10pm Monday-Friday and non-resident overnight. Weekend on calls are worked on a shift pattern, with one consultant (resident) covering Saturday and Sunday days (8am-8pm) and another consultant (non-resident) covering the nights (8pm-8am). The weekend night consultant also covers Friday night. This is detailed in the job plan and remunerated according to current contractual terms and conditions. The non-resident on-call attracts an availability supplement of 3%.

We are ESNEFT and we provide hospital and community health services to almost one million people across east Suffolk and north Essex. Our dedicated staff deliver care from acute hospitals in Colchester and Ipswich, community hospitals, surgeries, community clinics and in patients’ own homes.

ESEOC will have eight theatres dedicated to elective orthopaedic surgery and three ring-fenced elective wards. Approval has been granted for a Post-operative Care Unit (POCU) in the DCMB with dedicated out-of-hours anaesthetic cover.

Patients will be admitted to their own individual bays on the ground floor of the DCMB where they will be seen by anaesthetists on the morning of surgery. They will then be able to walk to the adjacent theatres, all of which have a separate anaesthetic room. All eight theatres are very large (55m2) which will allow for a spacious and uncluttered working environment with ample room for the latest equipment, including surgical robots.

ESNEFT has identified Epic as their preferred supplier in delivering a new Electronic Patient Record system. The opportunity to develop our process and clinical pathways using the best in class EPR offers ESNEFT the platform to strive for excellence in all areas of healthcare

Our philosophy is thatTime Mattersto everyone. Across the Trust, we concentrate on improving the things we do and removing those which cause delays for staff and patients.

The successful candidates will take a full and equal share in the out of hour’s services for theatres and obstetrics. The out of hours cover involves resident evening sessions from 1700 -2200 hours and resident weekend daytime sessions from 0800-2000 hours with on call cover from home for the remaining time. Weekends are worked on a shift basis with Friday/Saturday/Sunday night on call or Saturday/Sunday daytime

NHS England (“Every day counts”) has prioritised the need to move to seven day working.
