The team at the Royal Orthopaedic NHS Foundation Trust provides a holistic approach when caring for a wide range of patients with complex musculoskeletal, spinal and oncology conditions, many of whom require high dependency care.

As one of the country’s few Elective Orthopaedic Specialist Hospitals, ‘The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital’ receives referrals & transfers only and therefore has no ‘Emergency Department’. This allows our nurses & ODPs to focus their attention on the delivery of truly holistic and patient centered care.

With multi-professional team working we are continually enhancing the patient journey and experience with high quality, evidence-based care delivery. This includes, Critical Care Outreach, Tissue Viability, Safeguarding, Infection Prevention and Control any many more….. We even have our own community service!

To assist the Band 7 Lead Practitioner in the responsibility of the delivery, standards and management of patient care within the Theatre. To provide guidance, support and clinical leadership to the Theatre team, while working closely with the Band 7 Lead Practitioner to ensure effective use of Theatre resources.

JOB PURPOSE:

To assist the Band 7 Lead Practitioner in the responsibility of the delivery, standards and management of patient care within the Theatre. To provide guidance, support and clinical leadership to the Theatre team, while working closely with the Band 7 Lead Practitioner to ensure effective use of Theatre resources.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

1.1 Provide assistance to the anaesthetic team either as anaesthetic practitioners, advanced scrub practitioners, scrub or circulating nurse and to recover patients without supervision.

1.2 Provide clinical and professional advice and support for members of the theatre team, being the lead member of the theatre team.

1.3 Be responsible for leading a team and providing skilled assistance to the surgeons and/or anaesthetist.

1.4 To assist and deputise for the Band 7 Lead Practitioner, ensuring efficient management of a theatre area.

1.5 Develop and maintain a safe quality service that will continually strive for improvement.

1.6 To maintain and develop professional knowledge and competence.



2. PATIENT CARE

2.1 To assess, plan and implement individualised patient care.

2.2 Ensure best practice in care delivery and monitor this using current standards; for example patient safety, safeguarding concerns or poor practice.

2.3 To provide skilled assistance to the team either in the anaesthetic or theatre area ensuring that all theatre and Trust policies and procedures are adhered to.

2.4 Assist in safety checks to ensure the correct patient has the correct procedure as laid down in the WHO (World Health Organisation) Safety Checklist.

2.5 Ensure electronic record keeping and paper records are maintained in line with Trusts Information Governance policies, clinical record keeping and professional regulatory requirements.

2.6 To maintain, review and improve standards and practices based on evidence based findings.

2.7 Inter-professional working to ensure patients care needs are met.

3. MANAGEMENT

3.1 To be responsible for the efficient management of the theatre and theatre team as allocated by the Band 7 Lead Practitioner including the running of lists, safe staffing and start times.

3.2 To ensure effective communication with medical staff, heads of departments and nursing/ODP staff.

3.3 To ensure that the Senior/Theatre Coordinator are kept informed of any changes to theatre lists i.e. cancellations.

3.4 To ensure that staff are trained and competent to carry out delegated duties.

3.5 To coordinate support for the theatre lists with surgical teams.

3.6 To ensure that medicines administration and management is carried out in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

3.7 To be responsible for coordinating and maintaining adequate stock levels of drugs and stores (liaising with the Theatre Logistics Manager).

3.8 To be responsible for ensuring maintenance of equipment, reporting any defects and involving the Band 7 Technical Standards Lead Practitioner.

3.9 Monitor and manage the performance of other staff with the support of the Band 7 Lead Practitioner, including conducting appraisals and performance reviews.

3.10 Monitor and manage the sickness absence of other staff with the support of the Band 7 Lead Practitioner, including conducting return to work interviews, sickness reviews including formal stage attendance management and maintaining sickness absence records in line with Trust policy.

3.11 Ensure that the Policy for the Health and Safety at Work Act is adhered to and the implementation of COSHH.

3.12 To assist actively the Band 7 Lead Practitioner in:

· . The recruitment and selection of theatre practitioners.

· . Induction of staff to the area

· . Audit and quality assurance programmes

3.13 To maintain a safe environment for all patients, visitors and staff per the Trust’s policy

on Health & Safety and Health & Safety legislation.

3.14 Assist the Band 7 Lead Practitioner in ensuring all staff attend statutory and mandatory training and maintain annual compliance.

3.15 Support the Band 7 Lead Practitioner with succession planning by leading and developing the workforce to create leaders of the future.

3.16 To undertake any other appropriate role or duty as instructed by the Band 7 Lead Practitioners.

4. EDUCATION AND TRAINING

4.1 To work alongside staff to improve their skills and to disseminate best practice, particularly with students and newly qualified staff acting as a preceptor.

4.2 To assume an active role in self-development by keeping up to date with current issues and new developments to meet the needs of theatres and the organization.

4.3 To fully participate in the process of identifying personal development plans requirements and assist the Band 7 Lead Practitioner and Matron in ensuring that such needs are met.

4.4 Assist with the assessments and education of staff within the theatre and Trust, acting as mentor and facilitator as required.

4.5 To participate in and when appropriate or requested to do so, initiate research projects and audit that will lead to improved Clinical outcomes or changes in care provision in line with Clinical governance.

4.6 Assist in the planning and implementation of new ideas and innovations to improve patient care.

4.7 To teach students, trainees and junior staff informally in the theatre environment and to take part in Trust wide education schemes as required.



5. PROFESSIONAL

5.1 To assist in ensuring all nursing staff work in accordance with NMC Code of Professional Conduct or HCPC Code of Conduct plus maintain own professional registration.

5.2 To deputise for the Band 7 Lead Practitioner and Coordinator when necessary.

5.3 Maintain clinical competence and update competence as required by the Trust and individuals regulatory bodies.

5.4 To ensure awareness of theatre and Trust wide policies and procedures and work within their remit.

6. ON CALL

The post holder will be required to work in accordance with service needs and take part in the on call rota.
