Medical Examiner Officer (MEO), Band 5

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated medical examiner officer to join our busy team.The successful candidate would be joining an existing close and friendly team of MEOs who work collaboratively and have a strong ‘can do’ attitude.



Medical Examiner Officers (MEO) are the backbone of the service. Theyprovide the continuity and oversight that the service requires and support theMedical Examiners (ME)in the scrutiny process by managing cases from initial notification through to completion.

The MEO role incorporates administrative skills, excellent communication skills and liaison under delegated authority from the ME with clinical teams and bereaved families

The successful candidate would require excellent communication and interpersonal skills, while displaying diplomacy, due to the sensitive nature of the role. Tobe a point of contact and source of advice for relatives of deceased patients, healthcare professionals and coroner and registration services.

The medical examiner service scrutinise deaths occurring within Bart’s Health NHS Trust hospital sites and deaths within the boroughs of City of London, Tower Hamlets, Newham, and Waltham Forest.

In April 2024, the Government confirmedthe statutory medical examiner system, work is taking place for the full introduction of the statutory system from September 2024.



Once fully in place every non-coronial death in England and Wales will be independently scrutinised by a medical examiner.



Independent proportionate scrutiny identifies how the patient died - ensuring accuracy of the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death, whether the clinical team or next of kin had any concerns about care, and whether the case needs notification to HM Coroner, or any other form of escalation.



If the successful candidate has not been formally trained by the the Royal College of Pathologists there is the expectation to self-fund this within 6 months (dependent on course availability)



The MEO role requires onsite working. The team offices are based in two hospitals within Barts Health NHS Trust, there is an expectation of cross-site working.



The usual hours for this role are 08:00 -16:00 (Monday to Friday)



The role also requires a commitment to out of hours MEO bank rota (currently 08:00 – 11:00 weekends and bank holidays).
