Summary


The post holder will deliver a highly specialist clinical service to the patients on the wards in addition to supporting the Clinical Lead develop and progress the service.

The post holder will be responsible for delivering child and family centred care in an acute inpatient paediatric setting. The acute paediatric Occupational Therapy team is part of a multidisciplinary team for children admitted to the three general paediatric wards and PICU. The caseload predominantly consists of children with complex needs following major illness such as trauma and neuro-surgery, and children with short-term needs following orthopaedic procedures and acute medical episodes. Occupational Therapy facilitates safe and timely discharge through early rehabilitation, and extensive liaison with other agencies and services to promote smooth transitions between hospital and home, and between specialist and local services.

The post-holder will have the following specific roles:
• To develop and provide specialist Occupational Therapy to patients in the Children’s acute setting, at times working autonomously, and being accountable for their own professional actions.
• To provide highly specialised Occupational Therapy advice in relation to the care of patients who have a range of psycho-social, physical and emotional problems in an acute or rehabilitation setting.

Professional
1. To plan and deliver a child and family centred occupational therapy service to a personal caseload of children and their family/carers whilst in hospital.
2. To assess and treat children with various conditions/disabilities and complex social and functional needs, within occupational therapy performance guidelines.
3. Through analysis and synthesis of findings, develop individual goal oriented treatment and intervention plans in collaboration with the child (as appropriate), family/carers and multi professional colleagues. This will include the application of skills to assess motor, sensory and cognitive function in the context of the child’s social and physical environment.
4. To communicate assessment and treatment plans with patients and carers, dealing sensitively with distressing or emotional circumstances and being realistic about patients’ expectations.

Organisational
1. To be responsible for organising and planning own clinical workload.
2. To ensure adequate handover of clinical workload during own absence.
3. To be responsible for and facilitate a safe environment, recognising patients’ requirements for privacy and dignity.
4. To have a good knowledge of and to abide by the department’s and Trusts policies and procedures, and to comment and contribute to the development of policies and procedures within the defined clinical area.
5. To be aware of departmental procedures with regard to stock control of stationery / equipment and other work related items and to follow a system for replenishing stock. To supervise others in the day to day routine management of stock control of stationery, equipment and other work related items.
6. To participate in the process of recruitment and selection as required by the Clinical Team Lead.
7. To ensure departmental equipment is fit for purpose and to take appropriate action to ensure the safety of patients, carers and staff using the equipment.
8. To be responsible for arranging servicing of departmental equipment, ensuring fit for purpose.
9. To ensure equipment used in the assessment and treatment of patients is fit for purpose and to notify the supervisor of any faults that require repair or attention.
10. To effectively communicate administrative and departmental issues with all members of the Children’s Therapy Department, to ensure minimum admin duties and maximise time for direct patient intervention.
11. To recognise and comply with departmental procedure for positive reporting, booking annual leave, study leave, sickness and absence reporting.
12. The job may involve frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions on regular daily basis and may involve exposure to bodily fluids including sputum, vomit, urine and unpleasant smells and occasionally exposure to verbal and physical aggression. 13. The post holder will need to demonstrate the ability to concentrate while undertaking work that is not always predictable with competing demands for attention. They must be able to prioritise caseload and work flexibly around interruptions relating to patient care.
