Summary




Job Summary

Ourcardiovascular centreat Guy's and St Thomas’ provides a wide range of services to the local population, and as a specialist centre, primarily to south east London and Kent. The centre is comprised of three departments; cardiology, cardiac surgery andvascular surgery, providing treatment to inpatients across several different wards based at St Thomas’ Hospital. We also provide a specialist services to our Gastrointestinal patients with complex surgical needs locally, across London and Kent. We work collaboratively with an award winning amputee rehabilitation team. We also work closely with the Perioperative care of the older person undergoing surgery and the Cardiology Older person Specialist team in optimising patient care, providing holistic assessment and reducing length of stay. We are passionate about service development, research and evidence based practice.



This specialist band 6 Occupational Therapy post provides specialist Surgery and Cardiovascular OT assessment and intervention to patients across the trust and is supervised by a Band 7 Senior Specialist OT. This opportunity will allow you to develop and utilise your specialist clinical skills in the management of people with complex health, rehabilitation and social care needs. You will also support with management of Junior Occupational Therapists, Advanced Occupational Therapy assistant and students.

The Occupational Therapy service has a supportive and progressive management structure with departmental objectives founded upon the principles of the clinical governance framework and trust core values. Multi-disciplinary working within the Trust is well established and Students are accepted on placement from several training schools.

Clinical:

-To be responsible for providing specialist individual client centred assessments on the acute surgical and vascular wards who have complex conditions such as a amputees requiring rehabilitation in the acute phase and other surgical conditions.

-To address occupational performance skills, patterns, context or contexts and activity demands in collaboration with patients and carers both in the hospital and patient’s home environment

-To undertake specialist multi-needs assessment using analysis and synthesis to develop individual goal and task orientated treatment plans in collaboration with patients, carers and colleagues.

-To carry out physical, cognitive and functional assessments and treatment to facilitate and promote functional independence.

-Ensure reviews demonstrate ethical clinical reasoning and problem solving techniques to determine agreed outcomes across health and social care.

-Accurately record all professional judgements and decisions taken, keeping records of plans in accordance with Occupational Therapy Policies.

-To maintain high standards of patient care working within the Occupational Therapy Code of Conduct and Occupational Therapy Service Standards and Procedures.

-To allocate appropriate patient related tasks and ongoing treatment to Occupational Therapy assistants and technical staff, reviewing and monitoring outcomes.

-Undertake complex risk assessments to determine appropriate management specifically relating to moving and handling safe use of equipment pre-discharge access visits and home assessments ensuring safety for self and others during Occupational Therapy interventions both in hospital and the patient’s home.

-To be proactive in the monitoring, recording and reporting of changes in clinical practice which may influence Occupational Therapy Service delivery.

-To demonstrate understanding and application of National guidelines and legislation relating to health and social care and their impact on Occupational Therapy practice.

-To be responsible for the clinical, professional development and day to day management of Junior Occupational Therapists and assistants.

-Use supervision and professional development plans to promote own and others clinical effectiveness where appropriate.

-To identify personal competency limitations in relation to clinical practice seeking advice and guidance through supervision structures.

-To manage clinical workloads of self and others using effective strategies to prioritise referrals and resources on a day to day basis seeking guidance as appropriate.
