Summary

A Vacancy at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

We are delighted to announce a new opportunity to apply for 2 new Oxford Improvement & Innovation Fellow posts linked to the Emergency Department at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The Trust is committed to expanding and embedding quality improvement and innovation across the organization. These posts are an exciting opportunity to be at the forefront of this work.

Applications are invited from core- and specialist-level doctors in training with an interest in Quality Improvement (QI), as well as those who have completed higher specialist training and would like to do a post-CCT fellowship in QI. As the placements are not currently formally recognized for clinical training, higher specialist trainees will need to apply to their local Deanery for Out Of Programme Experience (OOPE).

Each post will combine 50% clinical work in the emergency department with 50% dedicated time to work on one or more of the Trust’s priority Improvement or Innovation projects. Applications for less than full time posts will also be considered. Salary will be commensurate with the successful applicants’ stage of clinical training.

Interested candidates are invited to contact Dr Andrew Brent (Director of Clinical Improvement & Deputy Chief Medical Officer, andrew.brent@ouh.nhs.uk) and Dr Adham Khalek (Clinical Lead for Emergency Department Adham.khalek@ouh.nhs.uk) for an informal discussion about the posts.

In the Emergency Department, you will be responsible for the initial assessment and management of unselected acutely ill and injured patients (both adult and paediatric). Clinical shifts are undertaken on a full shift, annualised rota in either of the Trusts Emergency Departments. This allows a mix of Major Trauma and teaching hospital experience alongside more local ED type presentations.

As a clinical Fellow in the ED you will contribute to the supervision and training of more junior doctors (GP trainees, ACCS and FY2 doctors).

He/she/they will assist with clinical administration, for example, checking X-ray reports, corresponding with patients and their general practitioners. He/she/they will have opportunities to participate in the department’s Clinical Governance activities, including departmental audit, and national audits required by the Healthcare Commission. He/she/they will also be expected to attend departmental teaching sessions. He/she/they will be responsible for keeping his/her/their resuscitation training up to date.

Quality Improvement at Oxford University Hospitals

Oxford University Hospitals is committed to embedding Quality Improvement (QI) across the organisation. This is supported by the Integrated Quality Improvement team and Head of Quality Improvement; a growing community of QI practitioners; a dedicated Quality Improvement Education strategy with an expanding offer of learning opportunities including the QI Hub Programme, which won the which won the Health Service Journal Changing Culture Safety Award 2021; twice or thrice monthly ‘QI Stand Up’ events to share QI projects with colleagues; and a number of clinical fellowships that incorporate quality improvement. These Oxford Innovation and Improvement Fellowships build further on the Trust’s wider Quality Improvement strategy.

IMPROVEMENT & INNOVATION

You will be guided by the Director of Clinical Improvement on appropriate choice of project(s) that align with the Trust strategic and improvement priorities, taking account of your interests and experience. This might include supporting delivery of an important existing improvement project; developing/leading a new Quality Improvement (QI) project to address an agreed priority; or application of a needs led approach to innovation and improvement in a key clinical area. QI Projects may be based in any part of the Trust so will not necessarily be related directly to the Fellow’s area of clinical practice.

As an Oxford Quality Improvement and Innovation Fellow you will receive coaching and mentoring from an expert in QI within the Integrated Quality Improvement Team at Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. You will join other Fellows as a member of a facilitated Action Learning Set over the duration of your placement.

Oxford Improvement & Innovation Fellows will join and contribute to a growing community of QI practitioners in the Trust, including through participation in formal QI training as learner and/or educator, depending on learning needs and experience. You will be encouraged and supported to present your work at both internal and external events and, if appropriate, to write up their project(s) for publication in a peer reviewed QI journal.
