Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Fellow post at the Oxford Centre for Enablement (OCE). This post is ideal for those seeking to further their medical experience in a specialist rehabilitation setting following Foundation or Speciality Training.

The OUHFT comprises four hospitals: John Radcliffe, Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, Churchill Hospital and the Horton General Hospital.

The post is primarily based at the Oxford Centre for Enablement (OCE), which is located at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre campus in Headington, close to the John Radcliffe and Churchill Hospitals. OCE is a specialist neurological rehabilitation centre with an international reputation for excellence. It has a strong research and academic record. There are 18 inpatient beds (Level 1), a specialist spasticity service, a large multidisciplinary outpatient rehabilitation service, specialist seating and disability equipment services. The prosthetic service is co-located on-site.

The appointment is on a full-time basis, for 1 year fixed term, with the possibility to be extended. Applications are welcome from those who wish to job share. Candidates whishing to apply for less than a year are welcomed. Those with academic and subspecialty interests are encouraged to discuss the opportunities that are available. Oxford is a beautiful historic city with much to offer. We have excellent schools and fabulous communities. With access to London there is something for everyone.

OCE is an internationally recognised specialist centre for rehabilitation, taking patients with the most complex levels of neurological injury and illness. There are 18 in-patients undergoing rehabilitation following brain injuries, strokes etc, and a wide variety of outpatient services including Physiotherapy, Clinical Neuropsychology, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Spasticity Management clinics, wheelchair and special seating clinics, the regional Prosthetic service and others.

The role of the Clinical Fellow is primarily to provide medical cover for the in-patients and patients attending the outpatient rehabilitation services. Out of hours cover is provided by a on-site SHO level doctor and registrar, available for support. There is an OCE Consultant on-call 24 hours a day. The OCE Clinical Fellow will participate on the on-call rota covering the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre site. This will involve in and out-of-hours cover of a range of orthopaedic patients and the OCE inpatients.

This post will give the successful applicant a chance to experience a Level 1 (i.e. highly specialist) neurological rehabilitation service in providing post-acute care for patients with serious neurological injuries and illnesses from a wide variety of causes.

Responsibilities will include admitting and assessing new patients, care for patients on the ward under the direction of the consultants (such as history taking, performing physical examinations, managing problems such as chest and urinary tract infections, organising investigations, communicating with patients and their relatives/next of kin, etc), supporting the discharge process, maintaining patient records on EPR/paper files/UKROC (National Rehabilitation registry) documentation/writing letters as appropriate.

Multi-disciplinary care and team-working are prioritised. Doctors, nurses, nursing assistants, neurophysiotherapists, occupational therapists, neuropsychologists, speech and language therapists and rehabilitation assistants all contribute to the care of patients from admission to discharge.
