Summary


The Sterile Services Department decontaminates and sterilises all clinical and medical devices which can be reprocessed.

Sterile Services has a vacancy for a full time assistant. Sterile Services is a decontamination unit which prepares and supplies sterile equipment working within a Quality Management System.

The functions of the department are undertaken with adherence to the Consumer Protection Act, UK MDR 2002, Health and Safety at Work Act, the Quality Management System EN ISO 13485,the relevant Hospital Technical Memorandum’s and compliance with Blackpool Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust policies and procedures.

Various hours to be worked between 08.00am - 02.00am

To prepare and supply adequate sterile supplies to the departments/customers.
• Work to deadlines, assuring the quality and safe use of all instruments and of all equipment that is prepared, prior to sterilisation for all user groups.
• Ensure compliance with required standards, documented procedures and work instructions.
• Support the Vision and Values of the Trust.

The primary role of a decontamination unit is to reprocess re usable medical devices, many of which are technically advanced and have to be dismantled, decontaminated, reassembled and examined before being sterilised. This is a vital aspect of the work.

Stock Control
• Ensure that stock rotation is carried out.
• Check that the minimum stock levels are maintained as specified on the written stock lists.
• Top up raw materials on a daily basis into the clean room.

Decontamination Process (Washroom)
• Ensure correct Personal Protective Equipment is worn at all times.
• Follow the correct entry and exit procedure for the washroom
• Follow all work instructions for the safe handling and cleaning of all instrumentation and the safe use of all machinery
• Track and trace all equipment through the I.T. System (Scantrack)
• Carry out in house cleaning tasks as directed
• Report all non – conformances to a Supervisor
• Handle all equipment with care

Stock Control

2. Ensure the correct footwear and clothing is worn at all times
3. Carry out in house cleaning tasks as directed
4. Follow hand hygiene code.
5. Follow work instructions for the safe use of machinery
6. Follow all work instructions for the safe handling checking and packing of instrument trays and supplementaries.
7. Adhere to the uniform policy
8. Track and trace all equipment through the I.T. System (Scantrack)
9. Report all non – conformances to a Supervisor
10. Handle all equipment with care


Decontamination Process (Autoclave Area)
1. Follow the correct entry and exit procedure for the autoclave area.
2. Ensure the correct footwear and clothing is worn at all times
3. Carry out in house cleaning tasks as directed
4. Follow hand hygiene code.
5. Follow work instructions for the safe use of machinery
6. Follow all work instructions for the safe handling of instrument trays and supplementaries.
7. Adhere to the uniform policy
8. Track and trace all equipment through the I.T. System (Scantrack)
9. Report all non – conformances to a Supervisor
10. Handle all equipment with care


Delivery and collection
1. Ensure the correct footwear and clothing is worn at all times
2. Be responsible for maintaining segregation of sterile and contaminated instruments and equipment whilst delivering and collecting, to and from customers.
3. Select correct delivery trolley for a specific theatre
4. Track and trace all equipment through the I.T. System (Scantrack)
5. Follow all work instructions for the safe handling of instrument trays and supplementaries.
6. Follow all work instructions for the delivery and collection of equipment
7. Handle all equipment with care


Miscellaneous
1. All personal protective equipment which is provided must be used in the correct manner
2. Assist in the training of new sterile services staff.
3. Ensure all products are tracked from the point of receipt, throughout production, final release and despatch using the Scantrack IMS tracking system and/or paper-based system as appropriate.
4. Ensure Quality Management System records are completed accurately and legibly and that uncontrolled changes are not made to documents or records.
Governance1. Ensure compliance of associated service risks across the Trust, with particular reference to health and safety legislation.
2. Ensure compliance with all policies and procedures within the service and Trust
