Summary


The provide clinical care to patients whilst also using the post as a learning forum to maintain good medical practice, and to strive towards maintaining ones own personal development through learning, teaching and managerial opportunities.



The duties of the post are subject to review from time to time in the light of changing requirements of the service. The post holder may be asked to perform exceptional irregular commitments outside of normal rostered duties as are essential to maintain the emergency medical service.

We are looking for a Trust Doctor (ST1+ equivalent) to commence as soon as possible. The post-holder will be part of the SHO rota and attend their departmental teaching programme sessions, including simulation training. An educational supervisor will be allocated and support will be provided for portfolio development.

Our department has a reputation as a friendly, supportive place to work and we have a track record for getting doctors onto recognised training schemes, e.g. via completion of CREST forms.

The Emergency Department ED) at Newham University Hospital (NUH) in East London sees over 90,000 emergency patients every year and an average of 500 patients per day. It is a Trauma Unit with strong links to the Major Trauma Centre at the Royal London Hospital, which is also part of Barts Health. NUH provides all the services expected of a district general hospital including acute medicine, specialist medicine, critical care, child health, women’s health, surgery, long-term care and diagnostics. There is also a dedicated Stroke Unit which specialised in rehabilitation of patients who have usually been cared for initially on the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit HASU) at the Royal London Hospital.


Newham is the largest borough within the Trust’s catchment area. The local population is very young and diverse, the case-mix exciting and varied, often with high acuity. There is a separate Paediatric Emergency Department and Urgent Care Centre.

The postholder has a duty of care and personal obligation to act to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). They must attend mandatory training in infection prevention and control (IP&C) and be compliant with all measures required by the trust to reduce HCAIs. All post holders must comply with trust infection screening and immunisation policies as well as be familiar with the trust's IP&C policies, including those that apply to their duties, such as hand decontamination, personal protective equipment, aseptic techniques and safe disposal of sharps.



All staff must challenge noncompliance with infection, prevention and control policies immediately and feedback through the appropriate line managers if required.
Confidentiality and data protection
All employees are expected to comply with all trust policies and procedures related to confidentiality and data protection and to work in accordance of the Data Protection Act 1998. For those posts where there is management or supervision of other staff it is the responsibility of that employee to ensure that their staff receive appropriate training (e.g. HISS induction, organising refresher sessions for staff when necessary).
Conflict of interest
The trust is responsible for ensuring that the service provided for patients in its care meets the highest standard. Equally it is responsible for ensuring that staff do not abuse their official position for personal gain or to benefit their family or friends. The trust’s standing orders require any officer to declare any interest, direct or indirect with contracts involving the trust. Staff are not allowed to further their private interests in the course of their NHS duties.
