Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Tobacco Dependency Advisor to join the Trust's Tobacco Dependency Treatment Service at a time when the service is expanding to support all adult inpatients identified as smokers.

You will be based at one of the Trust's 2 main hospital sites (i.e. at the Princess Royal Hospital Telford or the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital) and will be required to work flexibly, including providing cover at either hospital site and working weekends on rotation.

As a Tobacco Dependency Advisor you will play a vital role in providing patients with the best opportunity to successfully quit smoking and in doing so realise the following benefits:
• improve a patient's and their families' health and reduce avoidable illnesses
• reduce health inequalities, and
• decrease demand on healthcare services by reducing the number of smoking related admissions and readmissions.

As a Tobacco Dependency Advisor, your main focus will be to help patients to abstain from and/or quit smoking during their stay in hospital and then to maintain their quit attempt post discharge by referring them to a local smoking cessation service from whom they can expect to receive up to 12 weeks of support.

Each Tobacco Dependency Advisor will work in close partnership with the inpatient teams and provide adult inpatients with 1:1 consultations delivered at the bed-side to initiate and support patients in their quit attempt.

Based on these in-depth consultations, which will include the provision of specialist behavioural therapy, advice on nicotine replacement treatments and CO monitoring to measure lung function, the Tobacco Dependency Advisor will develop individual tobacco dependency treatment plans for each patient.

You will also be required to record the outcomes of each patient intervention and initiate any onward referrals to community providers by utilising the Trust's electronic databases and referral systems.

As an organisation we strive to provide high quality, safe care for our patients in an environment which our staff are proud to work in. We believe that by adhering to our Vision (“To provide excellent care for the communities we serve”) and working with our Trust Values in mind (Partnering, Ambitious, Caring, Trusted) we can achieve the right results for the people that matter most – our patients and their families.

You will be joining a well established team who possess a wealth of knowledge and experience in tobacco dependency treatment and a passion for furthering the Trust's smoke-free agenda.

To flourish in this role, you should have the skills to prioritise workload, have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and motivate others. You must also have previous experience of working in a health promotion or healthcare setting and have achieved, or be working towards, NVQ Certificate Level 3 or equivalent.

It is essential for this role that you will be fully supportive of the Trust's smoke free policy and act as a smoke-free champion as part of your work.

Whilst knowledge and experience of tobacco dependency treatment is desirable, it is not essential as full training will be provided for the successful candidate.
