Summary


The Haemoglobinopathies and Apheresis service is based at St Mary’s Hospital; a tertiary referral centre which admits children and young people with acute and complex conditions. The paediatric services at St Mary’s Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster and West Middlesex Hospitals work closely together to form West London Children’s Healthcare (WLCH), and the post holder will be part of a wider multi-disciplinary team, pulling the service values of these three hospitals into the centre of their practice.

We have an exciting opportunity a for highly motivated and experienced nurse specialist in Haemoglobinopathies and Apheresis, to join our team of world renowned Specialist Consultants, Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists. This role is open for an experienced paediatric or adult trained nurse who can provide visible and supportive clinical expertise and leadership to our team.

The nurse-led Apheresis unit is highly specialised in the treatment of sickle cell disease and is the largest service in the UK for children from birth up to 19 years of age. The unit is comprised of 2 treatment beds, providing a 5 day service, with occasional weekend cover and on-call service for emergency red cell exchanges. We also provide therapeutic plasma exchange and facilitate white cell collections. Nurse specialists have a 4 day working week with hours from 08H00-18H00 with occasional out of hours working for emergency referrals.


• To be a role model, leading and co-ordinating paediatric education and/or practice development in Apheresis
• To help identify the training and education needs of staff at within the service and the acute paediatric wards.
• To provide evidence based clinical bedside teaching and support the immersive simulated preparedness exercises to all levels of nursing allied health and medical staff.
• Provide specialist nursing advice to support and facilitate high quality, individualised care to patients /clients and relatives/carers in collaboration with the multi professional team, in line with the local and national protocols.
• At all times ensure that the needs of the patient are placed at the centre of care delivery.
• Working with the Band 7 CNS and Matron for Haemoglobinopathies and Apheresis to continuously seek opportunities to identify and incorporate best practice into service delivery
• To be flexible in the approach to the clinical area and provide cover across the paediatric floor
• Act as a key link with other members of the in-service education and/or practice development team(s) and external education institutions as required..
