Band 4/5 Depending on experience Orthopaedic Plaster Technician/Casting Technician,

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Orthopaedic Plaster Technician/Casting Technician to join the fracture clinic team at Imperial College NHS Healthcare NHS Trust based at both Charing Cross Hospital in Hammersmith and St Mary’s Hospital Paddington. We welcome applications from all appropriately and relevant experienced Orthopaedic Practitioners who hold British Casting Certificate with an ability to learn and understand new techniques and respond in emergencies.

Both sites are busy, acute teaching hospitals, delivering care for adults and children across North West London. The hospital offers some of the widest ranges of theatre specialties and is nationally recognised for its reputation for providing quality services.

The fracture clinic has been expanding its clinical capacity in recent months and this new post offers an opportunity to join ICHT at an exciting stage in its development. You will have the chance to develop your skills as part of a highly capable team where you’re guaranteed opportunities to learn and develop.
• Apply, adjust and remove all types of casts and provide information according to agree protocols
• To detect and initiate action for problems relating to casting and record any adverse incidents and events on the internal DATIX system.
• To document all clinical treatment and interventions on the patients EPR
• To attend theatre to assist with splinting/casting/braces
• To provide wound care and removal of sutures
• To prepare treatment areas for use and to clean up as required
• To check and maintain cupboards and storerooms in good order
• Fitting of simple orthotics as directed
• To run clinics within the plaster room involving consultants, registrars, podiatrists and orthotist

1. Duties
• Apply, adjust and remove all types of casts and provide information according to agree protocols
• To detect and initiate action for problems relating to casting and record any adverse incidents

• To teach casting, contraindications and complications to medical staff, colleagues and physiotherapist as required
1. Administration
• To be aware of the cost of materials and to use them cost effectively
• To order, check and maintain stock levels
• To supervise and coordinate the annual stock take of the department
• To make appointments for patients
• Other clerical work, e.g. photocopying, scanning and filing
• To attend tissue viability meetings as required
1. Communication
• To ensure effective communication and reporting takes place with the member of staff responsible for each patient’s care and provide a point of continuity for given patients.
• To maintain good working relationships with all colleagues within Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
• To be able to motivate and persuade others through effective communication skills; verbal, non-verbal and written.
• To communicate with colleagues to ensure the plaster room is staffed adequately before annual leave is requested.
1. Other duties
• To assist colleagues at all times when required
• To train junior or trainee orthopaedic technicians as required
• To undertake any other duties required by the Department
• Any other duties required by the department
