Summary

Estimated start date: September 2024
Duration: One year fixed term
Are you enthusiastic about edibles and productive horticulture? Do you have an existing Level 2 qualification and at least three months’ work experience in horticulture? Are you interested in specialising?
The RHS School of Horticulture (SoH) has been at the forefront of horticultural training for over 100 years. Its one year Professional Work Placement (PWP) programme will enable you to learn about the science, art and practice of horticulture in the specialist area of Edibles and Productive Horticulture at RHS Garden Bridgewater.
The Kitchen Garden at Bridgewater has more than 100 planting beds containing 29,000 plants. It embraces four distinct planting styles – forest garden, herbal garden and formal vegetable garden, all linked by wall-trained fruit, which wrap around the walls. Designed to be equally ornamental and productive, the fruit and vegetables grown here are supplied to the Bridgewater Café.
The Kitchen garden at Bridgewater grows productive plants from all over the world and demonstrates both traditional and modern techniques to its visitors. The edible forest garden is an interesting feature as it exhibits an alternative method of growing edible plants in a sustainable way. The Edibles team also help to deliver community outreach and adult learning and get involved in the many events held within the garden.
Throughout this placement you will work within the Garden’s departments and with its teams to gain knowledge, skills, training and experiences in Edibles and Productive Horticulture in the work-based context to prepare you for professional life in the industry.
While you will be asked to complete some guided learning tasks throughout the placement, the programme is very much about practical experience and does not result in a formal qualification.
