About the Placement
The Wellbeing and Communities Professional Work Placement (PWP) candidate will be involved in all aspects of therapeutic and community gardening practiced at RHS Bridgewater.

The focus of this role will be working alongside both the Therapeutic and the Community Grow Gardeners in the Wellbeing and Community Grow Gardens respectively, as well as with Education staff in the Learning Garden. In addition the role will spend some time working with the Outreach Team working with communities and schools across Greater Manchester.

The candidate will work alongside the team, assisting in the planning of suitable, person-centred horticulture-based activities at Bridgewater, and work with the team and volunteers to deliver those sessions. They will be able to work with knowledgeable staff on the use of horticulture to improve personal wellbeing, support community cohesion, and develop skills and confidence. The cultivation of a wide range of plants will be included particularly flowering herbaceous, herbs and edibles.

Throughout this placement you will gain knowledge, experiences, skills and training in Therapeutic and Community Gardening in the work-based context to prepare you for professional life in this sector.

While you will be asked to complete some guided learning tasks throughout the placement, the programme is very much about practical experience and does not result in a formal qualification.

Your responsibilities would be to:

1. Participate in guided learning tasks, e.g. in the form of plant profiles, skill profiles and project work.

2. Strictly adhere to RHS School of Horticulture (SoH) legislations, policies and procedures, in order to complete the programme.

3. Strictly adhere to current RHS and external legislations, such as those concerned with privacy, security, safeguarding, fire, health and safety.

4. Comply with current RHS guidance on biosecurity and plant health practices in order to minimise the risk posed by quarantine pests and diseases.

5. Assist in the day-to-day cultivation and maintenance of the Garden as part of your training and professional development.

6. Attend, complete and pass a diverse range of training activities as part of your work-based training in the Garden, in order to complete the programme.

7. Be actively involved in RHS shows and events, including helping with shows, event exhibits and exhibitors as and when required.

8. Guide and support other learners and/or volunteers as and when required.

9. Give excellent customer service and be able assist customers/visitors as and when required.

10. Work as an individual and as part of the Garden team as and when required.

11. It is compulsory to wear RHS uniform and special Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to be able to, with direction, work with a wide range of horticultural tools and equipment in a safe manner.

12. Undertake any other duties as may reasonably be required of you in the post.



Applicant Criteria

ESSENTIAL
• A keen interest in the area of: Wellbeing and Community Gardening.

• Applicants are expected, as a minimum, to have completed a Level 2 horticultural qualification. This could be a National Certificate in Horticulture, Horticultural Operative Apprenticeship Standard, a Level 2 Diploma in Horticulture such as a City & Guilds, the RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture or RHS Level 2 Certificate in the Principles of Plant Growth and Development.

• At least three months’ worth of practical experience (paid or voluntary) in a community-facing role (care home, community group, or support work) or horticultural environment (such as a historic/botanic garden, a public park, garden centre, commercial nursery or other relevant local business.) These lists are not exhaustive.

• Experience of working with diverse communities.

• Experience using basic horticultural machinery, equipment and/or tools.

• Experience working as an individual and as part of a team.

• Openness to working with new individuals across the Garden on a regular basis.

• Experience working with customers/visitors in a professional environment, and experience giving good customer service.

• A flexible approach to working (e.g. weekend work will be required on a regular basis, and evening work will be required from time-to-time).

• A fully enhanced DBS will be required for this role

DESIRABLE
• Proficiency with speaking, reading and writing English to understand and communicate instructions and complete paperwork.

• GCSE grades A*to C or 9-4 in English and Maths.

• The ability to use IT and a computer/laptop and accompanying software to produce guided learning tasks using Microsoft Office (e.g. Word, PowerPoint and Excel) and use Microsoft Outlook (an email system), and the internet for research.

• A full and clean driving licence.
