Summary

The Our Future Hospitals programme at UHL is part of an ambitious strategy of acute healthcare transformation, the capital element of which is part of the New Hospitals Programme (NHP). With funding of up to £1bn, we will be constructing two major new multi-million pound buildings on our acute sites in Leicester. However, the programme is about more than new buildings; it is about providing cutting-edge health care, underpinned by increasingly sophisticated digital services.

We have a unique opportunity for a Technical Director to join the Our Future Hospitals team. As a chartered member of an appropriate construction or engineering professional institution, you will provide specialist technical expertise to deliver the operational aspects of the programme, including; procurement, technical design, contractor management, construction delivery and commissioning for the new facilities - strong leadership skills are essential. As the trust’s expert in the technical/construction field, you will interpret NHP and NHSE guidance and policy, ensuring compliance and which meets or exceeds the required quality standards.

This is an exciting time to be joining one of the largest teaching hospitals in the country. You have the opportunity to play a key part in delivering this once in a lifetime transformation of healthcare within our region. For informal discussion, please call Nicky Topham, Programme Director, on 07921 545934.

The Technical Director will lead the development - including the construction and commissioning stages - and the management of plans to develop the new hospital buildings as part of ‘Our Future Hospitals’ Programme, in line with the vision and objectives of the National New Hospital Programme. You will provide specialist technical expertise in order to lead the delivery of the operational aspects of the Programme, including the construction of the design and estate infrastructure for the new facilities. You will be responsible for leading the procurement and work of the design team, the construction partner and other contractors. As the trust expert in the technical and construction field, you will be required to interpret new hospital programme guidance, and NHSE standards and policy to ensure compliance and delivery of facilities which meet the required quality. You will take the hand-off of the new hospital architectural design briefs, based on work produced by clinical and non-clinical workstreams, ensuring that the Trust maximises resources and that the new accommodation supports the vision for services at the new hospital site. You will be responsible for developing infrastructure plans for the site and will work with the team with regards to phasing and decants. You will be responsible for the management of the construction partners to achieve the requirements of the brief, within the delegated budget and in accordance with the approved delivery programme.

Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).

We have four primary goals:
• high-quality care for all,
• being a great place to work,
• partnerships for impact, and
• research and education excellence

And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.

Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:
• we are compassionate,
• we are proud,
• we are inclusive, and
• we are one team

This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.
