We are looking to recruit Trust Grade doctors in our Children and Young Peoples (CYP) Emergency Department for 12 months. Depending on your experience, you will join as a junior (equivalent to CT1, CT2 and CT3 level) or senior level (ST4+ or equivalent) doctor taking on responsibilities relevant to the level of role (you may hold MRCEM or MRCPCH to be considered for a senior level role)

If you are hoping to gain more experience / exposure in CYP ED prior to an application to a National Specialty Training Programme or if you want time to consider your future career direction while still working and acquiring additional skills and experience, then this post could be for you!

The may also be of interest to you if you have elected to take time away from training progression in the interests of work-life balance but now wish to re-establish a foothold in the profession.

The CYP Emergency Department sees approximately 45,000 children per year with a range of conditions including being the CYP Major Trauma Centre for the East Midlands.

Our department has undergone a £3 million expansion to create dedicated resuscitation area for CYP alongside services for CYP of all ages and increased the majors cubicles to meet the RCPCH Emergency Department standards. Alongside this we are developing a CYP Short stay unit to help improve the care we deliver.

To provide care for the community in Nottinghamshire who present at the Children and Young People's (CYP) Emergency department

These are service posts so do not have educational approval, you will be provided with excellent training and educational opportunities, tailored to meet your individual needs. Where service provision allows, you will be encouraged to attend educational teaching sessions. For interested individuals there will be an opportunity to contribute to audit/research.

NUH is a leader in the field of using new data sets to improve doctor experience/training, and has forged strong research links with the University of Nottingham. There will be opportunities to be involved in exciting and innovative projects around the use of novel IT solutions and app development.

This is an exciting opportunity at a wonderful time for motivated doctors to join a department which has a clear strategic vision to become one of the top EDs in the UK, with a stated aspiration to deliver ‘excellent care without exception’.

Located in one of the friendliest and greenest cities in the UK, NUH is a Major Trauma Centre and our ED is one of the busiest in Europe, seeing 179,940 new patients a year across co-located adult and CYP departments.

We have considerable opportunities to engage in research and education. There is a unique academic and clinical skills unit called the Department of Research and Education in Emergency medicine, Acute medicine and Major trauma (DREEAM) adjacent to the ED, which houses a large team of research nurses and clinical educators as well as a Health Improvement Hub. DREEAM delivers quality education across undergraduate and postgraduate medicine and nursing, and specialises in simulation and technology enhanced learning modalities. We are a site for the European Trauma Course (ETC). There are protected daily supervision sessions to support education in the clinical arena.

Post holders will be expected to keep themselves up to date with current knowledge and practice, to attend clinical meetings within the department and to participate in audit and in service training of other professionals.

Clinical Fellows in the Emergency Department can expect:
• To build upon experience gained so far in your career
• To develop further expertise in the identification and management of the sick patient
• To gain experience and familiarity in identifying and managing a wide variety of medical conditions, including making appropriate decisions regarding the need for admission, the development of strategies which might provide an alternative to admission and identifying where early discharge would be safe and appropriate
• To develop skills of history taking, physical examination, appropriate investigation and rational prescribing
• To master a number of basic medical techniques
• To hone communication skills with patients, relatives and colleagues
• To develop skills in managing time and conflicting priorities.
