Summary


These highly coveted have been tailored specifically for doctors who have completed two years of clinical practice in the NHS and intend to pursue a career in surgery. SWLEOC is one of the highest volume elective Orthopaedic centres in Europe with an excellent track record in data collection and research. The post therefore offers the opportunity to develop experience in the specialty in a well-supported and closely supervised environment. The post-holders will be guided through the steps required to produce a systematic review for publication, an audit suitable for regional or national presentation and a research project to generate a presentation for submission to a national or international meeting and publication in a peer reviewed journal. The Academic Surgical Unit is led by Professor Deiary Kader, Professor David H. Sochart, Mr. Vipin Asopa and Miss Irrum Afzal. The Fellows will be provided access to the UK’s largest orthopaedic outcomes database and guided through the essential statistical methodology for research. The post-holders will spend half their time in Outpatient Clinic or in theatre as first assistant to the Consultant Surgeons who perform more than 5,000 procedures per year, but will not have any day-to-day involvement with in-patient care. The posts are for one-year duration and are designed to optimise ranking for core surgical training applications and higher speciality training applications.

The post is full time, 40 hours per week, and does not include any on call commitments. The opportunity for additional work on Saturdays is also available on an ad hoc basis.

Based at Epsom General Hospital, SWLEOC is a partnership commissioned by four South West London acute hospital Trusts and provides routine and complex elective and non-urgent emergency orthopaedic surgery services to patients aged over 18.

SWLEOC was rated as Outstanding by the CQC in their 2016 report.

SWLEOC is the largest hip and knee replacement centre in the UK and one of the largest in the world. It performs around 5,200 procedures per year with some patients referred from around the UK and internationally. Sub-specialties include hip and knee arthroplasty and revisions surgery, a young adult hip service, shoulder and elbow soft tissue and arthroplasty surgery and spinal surgery.

There are two 27-bed inpatient wards and a 17-bed Post Anaesthetic Care Unit (PACU), which includes a Day Case Unit, all of which are covered by consultant intensivists. There is an outpatients department for clinics and research clinics. There are six laminar flow operating theatres.

The post-holders will spend half their time in outpatient Clinic or in theatre as first assistant to the consultant Surgeons, the other half will be spent in research and undertaking x-ray analysis.
