Role: Occupational Therapist

Contract Length: Anticipated 4 months

Summary:

Competencies;

Adapts written, verbal and non-verbal communication to the patient and practice context
Uses culturally responsive, safe and relevant tools and strategies
Communicate effectively to manage people’s expectations
Obtains informed consent for practice and information sharing from the patient or legal guardian
Effectively introduces self and explains OT role to patient and family
Ensures the patient is given all information to make an informed decision, and is at the centre of decision making
Actively and effectively participate and communicate in MDT meetings, best interest meeting and case conferences when required
Communicate with patients, carers, families and other health care professionals effectively in a professional and respectful manner
Documents in line with HCPC and RCOT standards on the day of intervention also in line with Trust policy
Demonstrate conflict resolution skills and be able to hold difficult conversations with all stakeholders
Demonstrate effective presentation skills e.g. case study, journal club, IST



Personal & Professional development;

Actively participate and identify learning and development needs, seek support to identify appropriate learning materials
Maintain an up to date records with evidence of continuing professional development e.g. a professional portfolio
Uses reflective practice and can identify learning opportunities from this
Participate in regular clinical supervision and takes responsibility to make sure own needs are met
Is able to respond and adapt practice in response to feedback.
Manages own time and caseload and proactively feedbacks to supervisor with any issues surrounding this
Works within scope of practice and level of experience.
To deputise for the band 7 in their absence, and effectively leading the team in their absence
To be able to demonstrate high level prioritisation skills, both individual and team in response to high clinical demand
To be able to complete return to work interviews effectively and within set timeframes as per Trust policy



Health, Safety & Security;

Competently and safely use: Walking aids (ZF/RF/GF/EC/GC) Standard hoist and assessment for suitable slings sizes
Sliding board
Transfer aid- Mackworth, sara stedy,
Report any potential or actual risks at work that may put self or others at a health, safety or security risk
Know when to seek advise and support if unfamiliar equipment or situations are encountered
Demonstrate safe manual and therapeutic handling skills
Support and challenges others in maintaining health and safe environment.
Understand and adhere to legislation, trust policies and procedures
Complete and update transfer aids care plans using standard documentation, including the training of family/carers etc.
Recognise when it is required to complete a RADAR incident report



Service Development;

Provide supervision to band 5, 4 and 3 staff
Complete appraisals with band 5, 4 and 3 staff
Actively participate and present in the IST programme
Identify, participate and lead in quality improvements projects, including any audits
Take role of named educator with students
Know when to seek advice and support if unfamiliar equipment or situations are encountered



Core OT skills;

To be able to independently complete a relevant and appropriate background specific to that patient
Able to articulate clinical reasoning to support formulation of OT intervention including complex patients and social situations
Able to complete a relevant functional assessment including: Bed transfers, Toilet transfers, Chair transfers, Bath board transfers, Washing and dressing assessment and Kitchen assessment
To be able to carry out an Environmental Visit (EV) to identify need for minor modifications
To use appropriate outcome measures to evaluate progress and support SMART goal setting and discharge planning
To be able to review and modify plans, goals and interventions where indicated.
To be able to identify and prescribe/order appropriate equipment following assessment of more complex clinical presentations
To be aware of the discharge pathways and able to identify the most appropriate option in collaboration with the patient and the MDT and complete any relevant documentation to support this
To refer appropriately to external agencies
To be able to effectively lead on complex discharge planning cases
