Summary

This is a post in adult Urology, based clinically at Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, London for 12 months (from October) with possibility to extend for a further 12 months. The post combines a busy ‘core urology’ service and educational component post with a unique opportunity to be involved in cutting-edge research and innovation with colleagues at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), Barts Health NHS Trust, and the North East London Cancer Alliance. The post is designed to offer junior surgical trainees planning a career in urology, the opportunity to extend their clinical experience in urological surgery while carrying out exciting research and innovation projects. The post is not recognised for training but offers clinical and research experience which will aid future application to National Recruitment. The post would be particularly suitable for trainees between Core Surgical Training and entering a Urology Specialist Training Programme, but more experienced candidates will also be considered. If deemed appropriate, a more substantial project can be developed for a higher degree such as MD and PhD pending external salary funding.

The clinical aspect of the post focuses on strengthening core urology skills and knowledge, under direct supervision of Clinical Supervisor: Miss Jhumur Pati. In the department there are 4 consultant urological surgeons together with 4 other urology middle grades, an FY1 trainee and 5 Urology Clinical Nurse Specialists. There are daily ward rounds for in-patients and in-patient referrals from other teams where the registrars are expected to assess and outline management, supported by an FY1 trainee and with close consultant supervision. The unit is very well-regarded amongst local urology trainees for general urology training.

The research aspects of the post will predominantly focus on prospective clinical research and innovation in the field of prostate and bladder cancer diagnostics (Research Supervisor: Mr Prabhakar Rajan, Barts Health NHS Trust and QMUL). A major priority will be the support of a North East London Cancer Alliance-funded project on ADXBLADDER molecular urine testing for suspected bladder cancers to avoid unnecessary investigations for non-visible haematuria patients.
