Summary

We are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We welcome flexible working patterns for all our vacancies, including job share, so please clearly include any information regarding your preferred working arrangements on your application.

Are you an experienced Data Scientist with a passion for employing your skills and experience to protect and enhance the environment? This is an exciting opportunity to provide technical leadership to a team of data analysts transforming the way Water Company data is assessed to strengthen intelligence-led regulation and drive improved performance of the Water Industry.

We are looking for an enthusiastic and innovative Data Scientist to be at the heart of work to deliver digital transformation, providing advanced data analytical capabilities at a national level to support delivery of regulatory activities across the business. The availability of big data for the Water Industry presents a fantastic opportunity for the right person to deliver business impact in a high-profile work area.

In this role you will:

• Lead the planning and development of new and innovative approaches to the analysis, interpretation and communication of Water Industry compliance data.

• Provide technical input into Digital Discovery, working with other digital programmes including the Regulatory Services Programme and Environment Monitoring Programme to ensure integration of compliance assessment.

• Work with others across the business to identify opportunities to support an evidence-led approach to Water Industry regulation.

Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to have an incident role and make yourself available to respond to incidents or provide business continuity support during an incident. This may attract an additional payment and full training and alternative working arrangements will be available to support you with your incident role.

The team

You will join the Digital Innovation and Regulation Team in Water Regulation, part of the National Environment and Business (E&B) directorate. You will play a central role in shaping and delivering the Environment Agency’s data and evidence led approach to regulating Water Companies.

In E&B we promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. We use evidence, expertise, and innovation to enhance and support delivery, influence policy, legislation and secure resources.

Experience/skills required

You will have extensive experience of informing and designing new approaches to analysing large volumes of data. It is desirable, but not essential, that applicants have knowledge and experience of the Water Industry sector and Environmental Permitting Regulations permit requirements.

Applicant should have:

• Experience of leading data initiatives to improve business processes and performance.

• Experience of managing and analysing large datasets, ideally flow/effluent data, using statistical computing and analysis software such as ‘R’, Python, FME, ArcGIS and the Microsoft Power Platform.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work with others to shape product delivery.

• The ability to manage your own workload, prioritising conflicting demands to meet deadlines.

• The ability to lead and delegate work to others in the team to support their development and appropriately utilise their skill sets.
Membership of a professional organisation, e.g. CIWEM, is advantageous but not essential.
