About the Role

This position sits within the Data Science team in TD&D (Technology, Digital & Data) supporting SSEN Distribution across a number of core uses cases including, facilitating & supporting the transition to net zero, assisting the delivery of the ED2 (Electricity Distribution 2) agreed business plan, driving efficiency savings via the use of automation/machine learning & insight & building market leading machine learning technology solutions to drive best in class service to our customers.

As a Lead Data Scientist, you'll help to drive innovation and the usage of machine learning technology to support key business use cases, leveraging the Azure platform, Python, Data-bricks, SQL, DevOps & geospatial data to create end to end products to support key products.

As a lead role, you will have end to end product life-cycle ownership & will be responsible for driving projects to completion - alongside this engagement with key business stakeholders & responsibility for team mentoring & development of the trainee & more junior data science resources.

Key responsibilities for this role will include:

- Support the adoption of machine learning products across the wider SSEN business, with products such as fault volume forecasting, high resolution weather data insights & the network load model.

- Create sustainable solutions & working with our data quality/governance teams & ensuring compliance to data security & GDPR.

- Leveraging advances in AI/ML technology to work alongside the Data science team to create a series of prototype products in the field of generative AI (ChatGPT).

- Driving adoption of best practice (DevOps, Repo, version control) across the wider data science & data team, through the use of demos & technology exploration.

- Keeping up to date with newly available technology, applications & cloud enhancements - feeding opportunities back to the broader team.

- Driving down platform usage costs through innovation, optimization, value focus decision making & supporting the training & development of existing resource & future on-boarding of junior team members.

What do I need?

To to be successful in this role, we would love you to have:

- Extensive experience with the Microsoft Azure platform, Python, Databricks, SQL, Geospatial tools, Azure DevOps, use of repo, data factory & pipeline creation. With machine learning experiencing on the Microsoft Azure platform, AutoML, Python.

- Excellent communication & stakeholder management skills, with the ability to drive value via end to end ownership of business use cases related problems.

- Early experience of new tech - such as NLP & generative AI (familiarity with potential use cases, value & concerns - ethical AI, information security).

- Extensive experience working at a lead level within a data science team is desirable.
