The Paediatric Opthalmology team are excited to advertise for a new role of Specialist Support Nurse at a Band 5. This role will be to support children/young people and their families as they visit the Ophthalmology clinics. You will be working closely with the Clinical Nurse Specialist for the service and the wider multi-disciplinary team which comprises consultants, optometrists, safeguarding team and the inpatient ward staff.

The paediatric team is a dynamic team, recently having won the CUH award for innovation. This is a great opportunity to learn specialist skills and develop Band 5 nursing skills.

You will have good clinical skills and previous experience of working in an outpatient setting would be advantageous. You will be providing individualised nursing and family centred care for children in the ophthalmology clinic with minimal supervision.

You will need to be able to assess the care needs of the children / young people coming through ophthalmology as inpatient / outpatients and liaise with the members of the MDT to ensure that the children receive a high standard of care.

You should be able to communicate confidently and effectively with other professionals and also with families / carers. This will enable you to teach families, when appropriate, about ongoing care for their child.

You will be responsible for competently providing safe and effective care to children attending the ophthalmology outpatient department with minimal supervision by a more experienced registered nurse. Assess care needs, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care. Participate in the supervision and teaching of unqualified and qualified staff, including students. To develop specialist skills to support the specialist support nurse and clinical nurse specialist.

You will participate in teaching programmes for more junior staff and pre-registration students, facilitating them to achieve their learning outcomes and objectives.

You will be able to sensitively deal with the frequent challenges associated with social differences, parental anxiety and cultural diversity. You will have a good knowledge of safe guarding processes and now how to escalate any concerns.
