An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Bristol and Weston Bowel Cancer Screening Centre which covers Bristol and North Somerset, serving a population of over 900,000.

We are looking to recruit for 1 year an enthusiastic and dedicated registered nurse to join our screening team. As the Band 7 Lead Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) you will be responsible for ensuring the clinical leadership and direction of the nursing team. We are looking for a candidate with management experience and strong project management skills to implement innovative ways of working to support the team in achieving the quality measures required by the BCSP.

You will employed by University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust and based at the Bristol Royal Infirmary, but you will be required to work across multiple sites, including Bristol Royal Infirmary, South Bristol Community Hospital, Southmead Hospital and possible future working at Weston General Hospital.

We are looking for an experienced hardworking, flexible and committed individual to join our team, providing high quality care to all screening participants. You will be responsible for line managing the band 6 SSPs and supporting them in their duties.

You must be able to work effectively as part of a team, and as an autonomous practitioner managing your own caseload of patients. You will be responsible for undertaking nurse led clinics including patient assessment, provision of information and preparation and support of those undergoing endoscopic or radiological investigations, within the screening programme. The role requires you to communicate and work closely with the wider Multidisciplinary team across different hospital trusts. You must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate sensitive and complex information to both patients and colleagues, including breaking significant news.

Additionally you must have good Information Technology (IT) skills as this post also includes daily data entry into a national screening database. Specialist training will be provided for use of the Bowel Cancer Screening IT system, Open Exeter. Some experience in teaching or health promotion is also an advantage, but not essential. You should also hold a full driving licence, have access to a car and be willing to travel between hospital sites.

University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS Foundation Trust (UHBW) is one of the largest acute Trusts in the country, bringing together a combined workforce of over 13,000 staff and over 100 different clinical services across 10 different sites, serving a core population of more than 500,000 people across South West England. UHBW has been rated by the CQC as ‘Good’ overall and our staff are proud to deliver excellent care to the people of Bristol, Weston and beyond. As a forward-thinking multi-award winning Trust and a digital exemplar committed to improving patient care, our world-leading research and innovations are having a positive local and global impact. Our hospitals are spread across Bristol and Weston, join us and you can enjoy the very best of both worlds; city living within a stone’s throw of the countryside or beside the seaside, both with easy access to all that the South West has to offer. UHBW is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. As an equal opportunities employer actively working towards a diverse workforce we aim to recruit and retain a workforce which represents the rich diversity of the local population at all levels and are committed to designing our services around the needs of individual patients and those around them. Anonymous information will be used from your application in order to ensure we’re meeting our pledge.

Previous experience and knowledge of working in the following areas are desirable but not essential: screening programmes, gastroenterology, endoscopy, pre assessment, or oncology.
