Serco Marine Services operates and manages 120 vessels from 8 sites around the UK, delivering marine services to the UK Ministry of Defence, and providing ship management services to public sector vessel operators such as International Nuclear Services. As owners and operators of specialist vessels, from harbour work boats to ocean going support vessels, we provide world class integrated marine services.

We are currently recruiting for a Vessel Engineer to join our team at Devonport, Plymouth. As our Vessel Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting the Master with all matters pertaining to engineering and electrical operation, maintenance, and defect rectification.


Main responsibilities of the role include:


- Ensure safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all propulsion, auxiliary and deck machinery, electrical appliances, domestic installations, fittings and structures within and without the machinery spaces such as items as maybe detailed by the company from time to time.
- Responsible for ensuring that all vessel machinery and equipment is working in an efficient manner to support safe navigation.
- Ensure adequate safety precautions are taken prior to any task.
- Keep all engine room records as required by the company.
- Endeavour to maximise efficiency of machinery and equipment.
- Ensure that any repair works being undertaken by sub-contractors is being carried out in a safe and satisfactory manner.
- Ensure all measures to prevent pollution of the environment are always exercised.
- Fully conversant with the company Safety management system.
- Carry out other duties as may be reasonably requested by the master.
- Liaise and consult with the Mooring superintendent and management team as necessary.
- Communicate effectively with customers, management, and office staff.
- Assist the Master to ensure compliance with all oil and environmental pollution prevention legislation and contingency plans capable of operating all safety and pollution prevention equipment and appliance.
- Become familiar with details of vessel’s machinery and operating characteristics.
- Ensure that all planned maintenance and both normal and emergency repair work is carried out.
- Personally supervise the bunkering of the vessel and arrange all transfers of fuel/lube oil/fresh water.



What you’ll need to do the role:


- MCA Certificate of competency – SMEOL/MEOL
- STCW Personal Survival Techniques (5 Year Refresher Course)
- STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibilities (5 Year Refresher Course)
- STCW Advance fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (5 Year Refresher Course)
- STCW Proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats (5 year refresher course)
- STCW Elementary First aid
- ENG1
- Methodical in approach
- Good standard of education
