Summary


Manchester Spinal Fellowships 2024/25: Spinal Surgery and Spinal Neurosurgery at Salford Royal (August 2024 start)

Applicants are invited to the posts of Spinal Surgery Fellow and Spinal Neurosurgery Fellow (2 posts) to start in August 2024.

These posts represent an exciting opportunity for senior trainees to benefit from both Spinal Surgery (Orthopaedics) and Spinal Neurosurgery training and are open to both Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery trainees planning a career in Spinal Surgery. The posts are accredited as Surgical Training Interface Group (STIG) Fellowships for a successful STIG candidate but also open to other senior trainees

The posts are for 12 months from 7th August 2024. Each post-holder will spend 6 months in the Department of Spinal Surgery and 6 months in the Department of Neurosurgery (Spinal sub-specialty).

The on-call commitment would be Spinal On-call for an Orthopaedic trainee and Neurosurgery On-call for a Neurosurgical trainee.

The Departments of Neurosurgery (26 Consultants of whom 5 are spinal sub-specialists) and Spinal Surgery (12 Consultants) at Salford Royal Foundation Trust (SRFT) comprise the largest spinal surgery unit in the UK and a successful candidate would gain experience across the breadth of spinal pathology. Particular areas of interest for Spinal Neurosurgery include spinal navigation, intraoperative neuro-monitoring, cranio-cervical junction pathology, intradural tumours and minimally invasive approaches. Particular areas of interest for Spinal Surgery include spinal deformity (idiopathic and acquired), metastatic spinal disease and . There will also be an opportunity for exposure to Paediatric Spinal Deformity at RMCH for interested candidates.

In addition to the clinical role, it is expected that you would also be involved in research, and contribute to ongoing clinical trials, with a view to publication and presentation at national and international meetings. It is also expected that you will have the opportunity to attend national and international spine courses.
