Student Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (School Nurse Band 5 - Full Time Vacancy.)

An exciting opportunity to develop your professional career is on offer with Central North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL) in the borough of Harrow.

We are inviting NMC qualified nurses, to apply for a training contract that offers the opportunity to complete the Post Graduate Diploma (PGDip) in Public Health Practice. You will gain a Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (SCPHN) Qualification in School Nursing.

This is subject to funding from Health Education England.

You will be given a fixed term one year full-time contract to undertake a PGDip Specialist Community Public Health Nurse course (School Nursing ) starting in September 2024 at Brunel University and to be complete by September 2025. It is a full calendar year and consists of 50% academic and 50% practice. (Start dates to be confirmed by the university).

Successful completion of the course will lead to registration on Part 3 of the NMC register, an NMC recordable qualification, and eligibility to apply for a post as a School Nurse.

We encourage informal conversations in relation to this post.

Candidates will have to undertake a literacy and numeracy test at interview.

These are fully funded training opportunities; subject to funding being made available from Health Education England, to qualify as a registered Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (School Nurse) and is open to all qualified Nurses and Midwives.

As an NHS Trust we strongly encourage and support vaccination as this remains the best way to protect yourself, your family, your colleagues and of course patients and service users when working on our healthcare settings.

Your timetable for the year will be provided by the university and will demonstrate all the relevant information needed to complete your course. It will also include your clinical days/periods so you can not only gain knowledge about School nursing in our services but which is enhanced by our clinical staff who will support you in gaining the experience and knowledge to enhance your clinical skills. You will also have details of all the required assessments for the year.

You will start off as supernumerary, observing your supervisor and other members of the team, but will gradually build up your skills in order to do the work which school nurses do independently. As a student school nurse, you will be involved in the Healthy Child Programme and this will be achieved through health promotion sessions and early intervention. These may be face-face or virtual but you will be supported throughout in order to gain the confidence needed to support children and young people. You will also gain knowledge and experience in safeguarding and child protection which is another important part of our role.
