Summary


We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated Lead Biospecimen Co-ordinator to join our friendly team working cross-site in both Chelsea and Sutton. The successful applicant will have demonstrable experience in sample management in the context of research governance. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required for this role. Staff management/supervisory experience would be an advantage.

As the Lead Biospecimen Coordinator, the post holder is expected to:
• Support the operational manager in the day-to-day management of samples from multi-centre studies hosted by the Biobank and for the ongoing quality control procedures.
• Assist with leading the tissue collecting team working within Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust and our Academic partner Institute of Cancer Research at both Chelsea and Sutton sites.
• Ensure the seamless delivery of biobanking, with oversight of members of staff within the department across both sites.
• Ensure the collection of human samples is undertaken in accordance with the Human Tissue Act (HTA), and proactively support staff to progress their responsibility within the Biobank.
• Provide leadership, drive, and innovative solutions to maintain governance support in the department and promote access to human tissue for research.
• Assist senior management to aid the Tissue Bank Manager and Operations Manager to design, develop and deliver the long-term strategy of the biobank to enhance governance and actively seek collaborations.

As the Lead Biospecimen Coordinator:
• The post holder will assist with leading on projects within the laboratory setting, working bench side on a weekly basis, with careful and consistent logging of all analysis steps, and leading projects independently where appropriate.
• The post holder will be responsible for the collection and processing of clinical samples (tissue and blood) from multiple units and sites across Royal Marsden and Institute of Cancer Research.
• The post holder will be expected to ensure all samples required are received in-house in a timely fashion and for those samples required urgently to coordinate staff to travel off site for retrieval of relevant material ensuring integrity of a sample in their care is maintained.
• The post holder will have management and oversight of the collection of archival and new tissue samples, processing and labelling samples, managing the collection and storage of samples in the appropriate conditions (fridges/freezers/liquid nitrogen).
• The post holder will be responsible for tracking patient samples through the tissue bank and confirmation of receipt upon dispatch, keeping accurate logs and audits.
• The post holder will be required to interpret pathology and clinical data to identify appropriate samples for inclusion in the bank.
