Summary

We are looking to strengthen our Delivery team with an Apprentice Groundworker based in Walsall.

You will report directly to the Site Manager and work as part of the construction site team on client premises in a construction site type environment. The role will be focused on Civil Engineering activity on Water and Waste Water Treatment plants, undertaking groundwork activities and assisting the plant operators and site supervisors in the delivery of the construction plans.

We are looking to attract the leaders of our future. To continue with our growth plans for 2024 and beyond we are searching for a potential Apprentice Groundworker to join our apprenticeship scheme. We have an opportunity working alongside multi-discipline engineering site teams at a multitude of client sites throughout the Severn Trent region.

Groundworkers have the knowledge and understanding of:

the principles of health, safety, welfare and environmentally responsible work practices and how they must be applied in relation to the work, self and to others including understanding the principles of risk assessments
the techniques to handle and move loads manually and with mechanical aids including guiding the movement of articulated vehicles, plant and machinery using hand signals, hand signalling equipment and verbal/electronic communication equipment and storing resources safely and securely
why, when and how health and safety control equipment should be used when undertaking groundworks (e.g. personal protective equipment (PPE))
the principles and methods of working within confined space work
establishing work area protection
locating and excavating to expose buried utility services
providing temporary works including excavation support
the basic principles of internal/external drainage and ducting systems
measuring, marking, cutting and installing geo membranes to stabilise soil
gauging, mixing, placing, compacting and finishing concrete
reinstating excavations and ground surface finishes

A Groundworker can:

Interpret and follow verbal and written work instructions from supervisors and site managers
access, interpret and use drawings and specifications
select the required resources including tools and fixtures
move, handle and store resources complying with relevant legislation & guidance
use and maintain power tools and equipment
install and test basic drainage and ducting
set out and lay flags, paviours and edging to paths, driveways and other areas
locate and excavate to expose buried utility services using electronic location instruments.
form and reinstate excavations and surfaces to sub-grades, sub-bases and road bases,
prepare to, then direct and guide the movement of vehicles, plant or machinery.

Qualifications required to apply:

Basic IT skills, Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

Good use of basic written English.

Grade 3 Maths and English at GCSE.
Flexibility – The role is essentially site based and whilst there may be periods when attendance at an office, (Either MWH or a Clients), the need to commute anywhere within the Severn Trent region on a daily basis or on occasion lodge locally to a place of work is a requirement of the role.

Strong communication skills – both written and verbal are essential, and you must be able to work well within a team and independently.

Strong work ethic - self – motivated, flexible and reliable with good problem-solving skills. You will also have a strong client service focus and excellent organisational skills with the ability to multi-task.

Excellent computer skills - a good understanding of Microsoft Office are essential.

Curiosity - a natural curiosity regarding how things work, is desirable characteristic common to all commissioning engineers

Apprenticeship -

You will study a Level 2 Groundworker course with Chesterfield College. This will be for 18 months

You will be required to attend college 1 day a week on a day release agreement.

You will be predominantly based on site with a full team, working across one of our many sites in the midlands. You will be either provided with a van, or travel within the team to your designated place of work.

Occasionally, you will be asked to attend a training course or activity away from your normal construction site.
