Summary


The post holder will be a member of the multidisciplinary team and be expected to work under the direction of the nurse in charge. The post holder will undertake a range of duties contributing towards the maintenance of a safe, secure and comfortable environment for the patients, visitors and staff within all areas of the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). The post holder will also be expected to contribute towards the effectiveness of the department, participating in improving the service as required and provide an essential link between the Unit and hospital support services.

Communication
• Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
• Use effective written and verbal communication.
• Participate in ward and team meetings.
• To ensure all paperwork/documentation required is completed in an accurate and timely manner, and in line with current procedures.

Budgetary Responsibility
• To assist in the unpacking, checking and storage of all supplies and medical sundries as required.
• Ensure all equipment is serviceable and clean.
• Ensure effective use of material resources/supplies within the ward/unit in consultation with Ward Manager.
• Ensure safe storage, maintenance and handling of supplies.

Education and Training.
• Responsible for own compliance with mandatory training in accordance with the role and Trust policy.
• Participate in the annual appraisal review system.
• Participate in team meetings on a regular basis.
• Develop own knowledge and skills in accordance with the role and responsibilities.
• To participate in department-based training which is dynamic and meets the needs of the specific area

1. To be responsible for the stocking up of all areas within the SCBU. This means:
• Ensuring that all cupboards and trolleys are topped up to an agreed level on a daily basis.
• Ensuring that the unit is adequately stocked with gloves, plastic aprons and all standard PPE
• Assisting in receiving, unpacking, checking and the storage of all supplies and medical sundries.


1. To be responsible for undertaking the full range of cleaning duties, as per schedule, in a timely manner, ensuring working practices comply with all current policies and procedures relating to Infection Prevention and Control, COSHH and Health and Safety.
• To ensure a high standard of tidiness and cleanliness is maintained in all parts of the unit, and report identified problems to the nurse in charge of the unit.
• To ensure the safe storage of all cleaning products and materials, ensuring hazardous chemicals are locked safely away.
• To ensure the utility area is kept clean and tidy, and that all related consumables are kept in good supply.
• To ensure associated areas, such as rooming in areas, are checked daily, with any cleaning or linen changes required being undertaken.
• To participate in regular cleaning audits on a daily/weekly/monthly basis or when required and instructed by the Ward Manager.


1. Housekeeping Responsibilities. This includes:
• Ensure ward kitchen areas provide a clean and safe environment, adhering to health and safety guidelines.
• Ensure baby linen is laundered, dried and stored in a way adhering to Infection Control guidance.
• To be responsible for the cleaning of cots, incubators and all neonatal equipment.
• Maintain parental accommodation in a clean and tidy fashion.
• Ensure milk kitchen is clean and tidy with consumables topped up where required
• Check and clean the microwaves.
• To be responsible for the cleaning and defrosting of the refrigerator and freezers in the kitchens on a regular basis
• As part of Ward Clerk support role distribute menus and assist parents with their menu choices. Forward completed menu cards to the main kitchens for processing.


1. Ward Clerk Assistant Responsibilities. This includes:
• To assist with ward clerk duties as required.
• Answer telephone promptly, dealing with enquiries as they arise (all inpatient queries to be referred to a registered nurse)
• Complete all filing requests as required (including patient notes)
• To assist with maintenance of ward stationery stores.
• To assist with photocopying of documents
• To project the image of SCBU in a positive manner
• To act as a resource for parents requiring support with travel costs
• Meet and greet visitors to the Unit.
• Receive donated items on behalf of the Unit
• Ensure all patient notes are accurately tracked
• Ensure data entered onto hospital systems is complete and accurate
• Ensure parents receive accurate Outpatient and other appointments using identified systems
• Process and organise all mail
• Allocate parental parking permits


1. To maintain and adhere to Health and Safety Guidance.
• To work at all times in a safe and responsible manner ensuring adherence to safety measures concerning:• Fire regulations
• Infection Prevention and Control
• COSHH regulations
• Moving and Handling
• To ensure all equipment is kept clean and tidy
• To observe, monitor and report any situations within the ward, which could represent a potential hazard to the appropriate person in charge/facilities department.
• To report all faults/potential faults, damage or other irregularities with equipment or fixtures and fittings immediately, using the appropriate procedures.


1. General duties and responsibilities.
• To work at all times as part of the multidisciplinary team.
• To attend briefings, meetings and training sessions, as required.
• To wear the uniform issued and to adhere to current uniform/dress code and to use relevant personal protective equipment i.e. gloves, aprons and non-slip footwear in accordance with the Trusts PPE Policy and Infection Prevention and Control Guidelines.
• To promote the highest standard of customer care and a professional, welcoming and friendly atmosphere at all times.
• To support the smooth running of the Unit by working with the nursing team and undertaking ad hoc requests for additional duties to ensure the safety of the patients and support the concept of family centred care.
• To co-operate when new methods of working are introduce with the aim of improving work schedules and frequencies.
