An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, innovative and highly motivated Macmillan Head and Neck Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapist (0.8wte) to join our team here at the North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust.

The post holder will be responsible for providing a specialist service for patients with dysphagia and communication disorders due to Head and Neck cancer. This will include both inpatient and outpatient settings and will predominantly be based in our developing radiotherapy department. The successful candidate will be an autonomous practitioner and will be a key member of the Head and Neck multidisciplinary team which covers the North Middlesex University Hospital as well as other sites across the cancer pathway.

Proven experience working within the Head and Neck patient group, and in particular radiotherapy, is essential. Excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to facilitate change and a flexible approach is essential. Clinical knowledge and experience of dysphagia and communication issues within this patient group is required, including tracheostomy, laryngectomy management and videofluoroscopy, experience in FEES is highly desirable. The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate leadership skills and experience of service development in this area is also desirable.

We are looking for a candidate with:
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a diverse environment
• Proven experience working with Head and Neck cancer patient cohorts, particularly Radiotherapy
• Extended knowledge of tracheostomy, laryngectomy and videofluoroscopy/FEES
• Track record of working within an MDT
• Ability to contribute to service developments

• To provide a Clinical Specialist SLT service to patients with acquired dysphagia and communication impairments secondary to a diagnosis of head & neck cancer at the North Middlesex University Hospital NHS Trust. The hospital provides services at a secondary care level. This will mainly include patients receiving outpatient radiotherapy/chemotherapy/immunotherapy, including some post-surgical patients and patients with laryngectomy or tracheostomy.
• To provide expert SLT assessment and treatment to patients with complex head and cancer/laryngectomy undergoing radiotherapy/chemotherapy/immunotherapy operating with a high level of autonomy and discretion with clinical decision-making regarding dysphagia and communication impairments.
• The post holder will have a key role in representing Macmillan Cancer Services, both within the Trust and externally.
• The post holder will liaise with the Head & Neck Multidisciplinary Team members and have key worker responsibilities where required.
• The post holder will participate in delivering training to the Head & Neck Multidisciplinary Team, family and carers.
• The post holder will contribute to learning and development for other cancer professionals and wider associated workforce.
• The post holder will facilitate integration and referral to the Macmillan direct services e.g. support lines and information services.
• The post holder will have a key role in evaluating the progress of intervention, leading and implementing audit, service development and research activities, continuing professional development and other clinical governance activities with a focus on improved service delivery and patient experience for head & neck cancer.
