Summary


This post will be for 3 months initially (with the possibility of extending upto 12 months) to support the existing breast clinical team and will provide focused exposure to and training in Oncoplastic breast surgery. Most clinical sessions will be in theatre, with the opportunity to spend time the plastic surgery team on the Royal Preston site for exposure to micro-vascular techniques in breast reconstruction.

The post holder will
• Attend breast clinics and theatre sessions
• Provide cross cover for pre- and post-operative ward rounds and provide supervision of FY trainees in the absence of the SpR
• Attended specialist breast cancer weekly MDT
• Participate in Enhanced triage of GP referrals along with other team members

Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust comprises two hospital sites, the Royal Preston Hospital and Chorley and South Ribble Hospital.

The Department of Breast Surgery (Central Lancashire Breast Unit) is Based on the Chorley site. There are 4 consultant breast surgeons, 1 associate consultant 3 consultant radiologists, 2 consultant clinical oncologists, 1 medical oncologist, 6 breast care nurses, 1 specialist registrar, 1 FY2 and 2 FY1s.

Preston and Chorley serve a population of 390,000 for general hospital services. In addition, the Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is the site of major sub-regional centres for neurology, neurosurgery, renal medicine and burns and plastic surgery.

The Rosemere Cancer Centre based on the Royal Preston Hospital site is one of the three cancer centres in the North West, providing radiotherapy and chemotherapy services to a population of 1.5 million in Lancashire and South Cumbria.

The successful candidate will be mostly based at Chorley for elective work with no on call commitment. However will be expected to attend emergencies within the breast speciality.
