Summary

Duties and Responsibilities Clinical To contribute towards assessment / care plans / treatment programmes using a variety of modalities with guidance from a qualified clinician, including monitoring changing needs of the patient. To be able to report to qualified clinicians and discuss adjustment of assessments / care plans / treatment programme. To assist the qualified clinicians in delivering individual and group programmes. To work with clients in various settings, on identified developmental areas, e.g. play, behaviour, continence, communication, sleep To work to service priorities and manage a caseload within agreed competencies under direct/indirect supervision of qualified clinicians. To follow treatment plans and procedures for children of varying levels of disability i.e.: sensory problems, (blindness, deafness) learning disabilities, autism, AHDH or combinations of such difficulties in a variety of community settings To become proficient in recognising and treating a range of disabilities and disorders such as communication and behavioural difficulties, whilst being supported by qualified clinicians. To model support to children, families and carers and explain the support given. Share knowledge and skills with carers to facilitate their understanding of their childs behaviour. Provide advice and information to families and carers. To provide Person Centred Care. Complete detailed observations: behaviour and mood, in a variety of settings: homes, schools and leisure activities To write high quality and timely notes in the patient records following clinical interventions and phone consultations. To liaise with all members of the multi-agency and multi-disciplinary team in relation to caseload as appropriate. To report any changes in the patients condition, circumstances or response to treatment: to the qualified clinician. To communicate effectively at all levels with children and their parents /carers, healthcare professionals and other agencies to maximise potential. Use effective communication tools, verbally and non-verbally to overcome barriers to understanding. This requires empathy, sensitivity and good interpersonal skills. Keep accurate records of work undertaken and keep monthly statistics as required. Including documenting patient contacts in line with service standards. To have knowledge of and how to use equipment e.g: QB test, Board maker, digital camera, objects of reference, hoists, wheelchairs, standing frames, walking frames, seating and communication aids. To contribute towards risk assessments for individual children and the service. To be able to assist in handling of children using good co-ordination and techniques, to use experience to position them correctly in chairs in order to progress through the programme identified. To become proficient in using signs, symbols, or other high tech non-verbal communication systems To assist the nursing staff in devising a range of non-verbal behavioural and communication systems (such as signs or symbols or social stories) To provide clerical support such as preparing photocopying and maintaining supply of therapeutic materials / equipment and augmentative communication materials To work within infection control and health and safety guidelines in order to deal appropriately with unpleasant conditions related to client contact as they arise. To assist in carrying out child specific standardised assessments / observations in a variety of locations, in line with locally assessed competencies and discuss findings with supervising clinician, including involvement in ADOS assessments. To attend case meetings / reviews relevant to designated client caseload, when requested by supervising clinician. To demonstrate specialised equipment / materials such as timetables, schedules, social stories, communication symbols to clients in line with local policies/procedures at the direction of qualified staff. To have ability to understand and often deal with emotional difficulties for families associated with long term, life limiting conditions. To apply knowledge and skills in order to establish competencies and fitness to practice as an assistant. Organisational To be responsible for the designated work on a daily basis Collate and enter statistical data onto the departmental data base. Contribute to the induction of newly appointed staff / locums into the department. Be responsible for the administering arrangements and routine duties of organising offices of clinical teams, booking rooms, appointments dealing with telephone enquiries and ordering stationary etc. Contribute to development of patient care by attending relevant team, departmental or other appropriate meetings and comment on recommended changes to clinical care or service provision, liaising with parents, carers and other professionals as required. To take part in the individual trust appraisal and performance review programme. Actively participate in own staff development and review in order to identify personal development plans and training needs. Attend team and other relevant meetings required for post.
