If so, this is a fantastic development opportunity for you. In partnership with ECC, EPUT, and PAHT, we developed an innovative integrated rotational programme that offers work experience in Adult
Social Care (ECC), community services (EPUT), and Acute (PAHT).

The rotational programme is designed for ambitious professionals interested in widening their career development in various aspects of OT and will last just over two years. In this role, you will play a vital role in assessing and treating patients with a wide range of conditions. As part of the integrated partnership, you will work closely with other healthcare professionals and be integral in providing comprehensive care and supporting patients.

The programme is separated into four 9-month consecutive placements (Urgent Care Response, stroke/early supported discharge, Adult Social Care and Acute Services), finishing with a permanent position as a member of the AHP EPUT team.


• To be a Specialist Occupational Therapist with expertise in stroke and neurology rehabilitation, responsible for providing a high standard of assessment, treatment and evaluation to patients, both in an inpatient Rehabilitation Ward setting and in the community as part of the Stroke Early Supported Discharge Team.


• To work as an autonomous professional according to the College of Occupational Therapy ‘Code of Ethics and Conduct’ and the ‘Health and Care Professions Council Regulations’


• To contribute to the overall service development of the team and actively participate in Continuing Professional Development. Provide leadership through supervision, mentoring, education and training.


• To work as part of the integrated multi-disciplinary team to plan, deliver and evaluate all aspects of the patient treatment process, including rehabilitation, discharge and referral to appropriate community based health and social care agencies.

• Autonomously manage a complex caseload of stroke and neurological patients using clinical reasoning, critical thinking, reflection and analysis to support assessment and treatment.
• To undertake comprehensive assessment of patients with a range of complex health and social care needs. This will require specialist assessment of all aspects of occupational performance (physical, cognitive, mental, social and environmental needs).
• To develop collaborative treatment programmes with patients, carers and colleagues.
• Implement the appropriate occupational therapy intervention to enable the individual to achieve his/her optimum level of independence.
• Evaluate patient progress, reassess and review treatment programmes. This will involve determining the potential for rehabilitation and future care and support needs.
• Plan and prioritise own workload and delegate tasks where appropriate.
• Supervise junior staff and assistants to plan their work effectively.
• Facilitate the safe transfer of people and using equipment and approved moving and handling techniques.
• Identify and undertake routine and complex risk assessments, of individuals and their environment.
• Advise the multi-disciplinary team in determining appropriate management relating to moving and handling and safe use of equipment.
• Fit, adjust and safely use a range of equipment. Ensure patients, junior staff and assistants under your supervision attain competency in the safe use of all equipment.
• Provide support and education to patients and carers regarding all aspects of Occupational Therapy.
• To work flexibly across the ward and the community service as required.
• To manage and review effectiveness of therapy run groups
• Triage referrals into the inpatient and early supported discharge service when required



Communication Skills:

Demonstrate the ability to:
• Maintain confidentiality at all times, consistent with Trust policy and OT code of ethics
• Frequently use a range of verbal and non-verbal communication skills to communicate sensitively and empathically.
• Communicate effectively with medical, nursing and therapy colleagues along with external agencies. This could include case conferences, ward rounds and MDT meetings.
• Maintain accurate clinical records in accordance with professional and trust standards.
• Use IT skills accurately in note and report writing, equipment orders and home/access visit reports.

• To keep up-to-date with current knowledge and advances in Occupational Therapy practice within stroke and neurological rehabilitation.
• Participate in the planning, evaluation and audit of practice, clinical pathways and protocols.
• Actively participate in the development of the occupational therapy service, identifying gaps in the current service provision and working with the lead therapist in developing and delivering innovative and quality services to meet patient needs and national and local policies.
• Participate in and contribute to the continuing development of in-service training programmes.
• Cascade information to colleagues as appropriate to enhance their development and understanding of the profession.
• Critically evaluate current research and apply to practice.
• Undertake research and/or audit projects relevant to occupational therapy in stroke and neuro, disseminating findings at a local level.
• Provide support, guidance and training to junior staff and assistants, assessing and evaluating performance.
• To take part in mandatory, appropriate internal and external courses and make use of reflective practice .



Specific Responsibilities:


• Dealing with the day to day management of the inpatient OT service including delegating and monitoring work.
• Maintain and develop professional expertise in the assessment and treatment of patients following a stroke or neurological event.
• Be aware of the additional responsibility of lone working.
• Raise the profile of Occupational Therapy within the multi-disciplinary team and the wider community.
• Be autonomously responsible for complex management of stroke and neurological patient caseloads.
• Provide clinical expertise to other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
• Supervise junior staff at all levels.
• Plan and prioritise departmental workload.
• Develop and implement training for assistants.
• Represent Occupational Therapy at Senior level.
• Assist in the recruitment, selection and orientation of new staff members.
• Participate in the staff appraisal scheme as appraiser and appraisee. To be responsible for implementing and achieving development needs for self and junior staff identified from the performance review and development plans.
• Undertake the role of Clinical Educator for Occupational Therapy students, working with colleagues to ensure the standard of clinical placements and teaching meets qualification requirements.
