The Integrated Diabetes Service covers the East Lancashire footprint of Burnley, Pendle, Rossendale, Hyndburn, Ribble Valley, Blackburn and Darwen. Our purpose is to make a difference to patient’s lives and have a commitment to put patient care at the heart of what we do.

We welcome applications from suitably qualified HCPC registered physiotherapists who have a passion for Diabetes Specialist Podiatry to work in our Diabetes Service

This is a great opportunity to develop your clinical and leadership skills. As our service is delivered across multiple sites, you will have the opportunity to work with various members of the team to develop your skills. This post will be mainly at Royal Blackburn site, however visits to other sites across ELHT may be required across. All staff have to be flexible to work across all sites if there is a service need .

We offer weekly complex patient clinics to support the management of patients, regular supervision, and protected development time. We have a desire to cultivate compassionate leadership at all levels of our team and value all staff and their contributions to continually improve our service.

The overall job purpose of the Diabetes Podiatrist is to provide expert foot care in both the inpatient and outpatient setting. This includes acting as an expert resource for a wide range of health care professionals including ward staff community and practice nursing teams, community podiatry and GP’s to support them in the delivery of effective care over a 7 day period.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring a good working environment in which all patients and carers receive a high standard of care. This includes being responsible for diagnosis and treatment planning and where necessary requesting appropriate investigations/imaging and analysis/interpretation of results.

The role includes working in both acute and outpatient settings and will require excellent knowledge of referral pathways to members of the wider multidisciplinary foot team (MDFT). The successful candidate will be expected to be an active member of the MDFT and work closely with all members to ensure timely and appropriate care for patients. The post holder will adopt a highly visible, accessible and supportive approach to patients, relatives, carers and staff. It is expected that the successful candidate leads by example and will play a proactive role in quality and service improvement, working closely with the Senior Podiatrist. A particular focus is to reduce the number of amputations in the locality that are related to diabetes and long-term conditions.

To work in a wide range of care settings including hospital in-patient and outpatient services, community hospitals and other care settings where required 7 days a week.

To be accessible during working hours via mobile phone and Hot Foot Line to provide specialist advice and support to clinical and medical personnel and answer queries regarding patient treatment.

Work within the framework of professional codes of conduct and clinical governance to maintain and improve patient care quality.

Act as a clinical specialist podiatrist in the field of diabetes.

Be clinically accountable to the Senior Podiatrist and assist and undertake duties as delegated / requested by the Senior Podiatrist.

To work autonomously e.g. single-handed without supervision within defined areas, demonstrating effective time and self-management. Staff are encouraged and expected to seek professional advice from colleagues as required.

Be accountable for the management of a caseload of high-risk patients
Work closely with members of the MDFT

Work within the framework of professional codes of conduct and clinical governance to maintain and improve patient care quality.

Act as a clinical specialist podiatrist in the field of diabetes.

Develop, audit, implement, monitor and evaluate protocols / guidelines and procedures for specialist area.

Keep up to date of developments in specialist area and disseminate to the rest of the department.

Ensure effective communications are maintained with other healthcare professionals.

To work within a professional manner adhering to local policies and protocols

To work within the professional standards of conduct, performance and ethics

Develop initiatives and new ways of working within specialist field

Encourage modernisation within the team and department and embrace / implement evidence based working practices that will benefit the patient and the Trust.
