Summary


An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead our Occupational Therapy team. The successful candidate is required to be an excellent leader, with extensive amputee rehabilitation experience, having lead the rehabilitation of complex amputees such as those with poly trauma, upper limb amputation, multiple limb loss and complex comorbidities, together with excellent understanding of complex discharge planning and pain management.

The post holder will directly line manage the rotational Band 6 Occupational Therapist, Discharge Coordinator and a rehabilitation assistant, working closely with our nursing colleagues to deliver enabling care on the ward.

The successful candidate would ideally have close links and understanding of the amputee rehabilitation pathway in South East London and Kent and the wider amputee network across London and its neighbouring counties. They would also be accountable for the quality of the Occupational Therapy Service provision, leading on clinical governance. The successful candidate would complete and oversee the rehabilitation provision and progress of patients and provide clinical leadership and expert knowledge of amputee rehabilitation and discharge planning.

To provide highly specialist autonomous clinical management of patients who have undergone amputation.

To fully participate in the referral process to ensure appropriate referrals are being made and accepted and that the effectiveness of decision outcomes are reviewed.

To demonstrate an advanced level of clinical decision making, undertaking complex assessments and to develop, implement and evaluate specialised occupational therapy treatment programmes ensuring the MDT are informed of outcomes/management plans.

To be highly competent in assessing patients who have undergone amputations, based on advanced theoretical knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology, often in situations where conflicting evidence is present.

To input into care plans to ensure that therapy progress is translated into both ADLs and nursing care and that nursing care is translated into therapeutic treatment.

As a member of the multi-disciplinary team, to influence decision making regarding treatment planning and implications of physical dysfunction and rehabilitation needs of patients who have undergone amputation.

We provide specialist care for patients including heart and lung, cancer and renal services as well as a full range of local hospital and community services for people in Lambeth and Southwark.

The Amputee rehabilitation unit (ARU) is a 12 bedded rehabilitation unit for amputees. Our patients are transferred from acute hospital wards and stay with us for up to 7 weeks as they progress through their rehabilitation milestones. Our caseload is complex and varied, seeing a rise in multiple limb loss and trauma amputations as well as our PVD and diabetic amputees. Onsite services include a minimum of twice daily rehabilitation, tailored to the individual over a six day service. This can include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, group rehabilitation sessions, psychological rehabilitation and health promotion and pain management.

The unit is closely aligned with Guys and St Thomas’ Regional Rehabilitation Centre: Bowley Close, which continues life-long amputee care and rehabilitation post discharge. We provide specialist rehabilitation nursing including an enabling care approach and specialist wound care skills.



To have specialist knowledge of current prosthetic components for upper and lower limb prosthesis and the impact of prosthetic limbs on functional attainment.

To regularly undertake pre-discharge access visits and home assessments for patients ensuring safety of both patients and self during occupational therapy interventions both in the ARU and the patient’s home.

To be understanding when working with patients who are grieving, emotional or aggressive as a consequence of amputation, knowing when to refer to specialist counselling or to seek peer support from counsellors and others.

To demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance, clinical risk and to demonstrate the use of treatment plans with an evidence-based link.

To ensure that a high standard of clinical practice and patient care is maintained and to ensure that other occupational therapists in the team do likewise, through ongoing competency assessment and evaluation of treatment outcomes.

To fully participate in discharge planning as part of the MDT to ensure a smooth and successful discharge from the ARU and ensuring a full and appropriate onward referral for occupational therapy is made.

To actively work with the medical, nursing and therapy leads in the multidisciplinary team and across organisational boundaries to facilitate effective management of the patient care pathway.

To build links with primary and secondary care and work closely with relevant staff to facilitate appropriate care packages and care placements when necessary.

To communicate effectively and efficiently and liaise with other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure that patients receive seamless care within the Trust.
