Summary


Applications are invited for a 12-month fixed term Locum Consultant Transplant Hepatologist at the Royal Free Hospital, London. The post is initially to cover a 3-month period of parental leave with anticipated start date 1stJuly 2024.

The primary role for the appointee will be to contribute to the provision of hepatology and liver transplant services, including pre transplant assessment and post-transplant care. Experience in diagnostic and therapeutic upper GI endoscopy is essential. Ability to work collaboratively with MDT colleagues and the local referral network is essential. Additional sub-specialist interests are desirable and can be negotiated according to the experience of the appointee and needs of the department. The post holder will contribute to on-call rota for upper gastrointestinal bleeding (1:12), general hepatology (1:9) and liver transplant (1:6.5).

The Royal Free Hospital is a tertiary hepatology referral centre and liver transplant centre serving a wide geographical area and provides secondary hepatology services to the local population. The Unit has an international reputation for management of cirrhosis complications, including portal hypertension, and is a high-volume TIPS centre. Liver transplant activity has increased steadily reaching over 140 liver transplants in 2019-20, returning to over 100 transplants per year following the COVID pandemic. The unit has been a leader in promoting supportive and palliative care for patients with cirrhosis.

The appointee will participate in hepatology inpatient services and outpatient clinics with potential to develop their subspecialist interest. Within the department there are a number of sub-specialist and multidisciplinary clinics, for example, a joint Hepatology, Surgery and Oncology clinic for the multi-disciplinary management of patients with HCC, vascular liver diseases, NAFLD, pancreaticobiliary medicine, alpha1 antitrypsin deficiency, polycystic disease, autoimmune liver diseases and viral hepatitis. There are weekly MDTs in transplantation, viral hepatology and hepatobiliary malignancies, benign HPB disease, supportive & palliative care, hepatology radiology and pathology meetings, plus daily afternoon transplant meetings.

The appointee will contribute to undergraduate teaching and postgraduate medical and multidisciplinary education.

The Unit has an excellent reputation for clinical research, and it is highly desirable for the appointees to have interest and experience in basic or clinical research, including successful completion of a research degree. There is a commitment to collaborative working between clinical and academic medicine integrating with the UCL Institute for Liver and Digestive Health. An interest in research will be encouraged.
