Summary

Due to the expansion of our service, we are advertising for 2 permanent Band 8A Principal Clinical Scientist posts in Diagnostic Radiology and Radiation safety. We are looking for DR physicists with a few years’ experience and a good background in Quality Assurance and radiation protection/safety to work within the Radiological Sciences Unit (RSU) at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (ICHNT). The successful candidate will join a team of 10 physicists delivering scientific and technical support and radiation safety services to ICHNT and a number of external organisations.

The Trust has a full range of state-of-the-art imaging equipment and a dose management system and RSU provides a broad range of clinical service support, teaching and research in all imaging modalities at Hammersmith, Charing Cross and St Mary’s Hospitals. Therefore, the successful candidate (who must be HCPC registered) is expected to play a key role in acceptance, commissioning and routine quality assurance of x-ray diagnostic equipment. They will be appointed as MPEs and expected to provide MPE support in Diagnostic Radiology and contribute to the development and optimisation of examination protocols, providing compliance with IRMER legislation.

Candidates with less experience who are working towards gaining Medical Physics Expert (MPE) status in Diagnostic Radiology are encouraged to apply as training and support will be available.
• Act as Radiological Physicist with regard to x-ray imaging modalities and to actively develop physics services for these modalities within the trust and SLA customers.
• Plan organise and provide annual QA, performance assessment, auditing and radiation protection related to radiological physics in support of diagnostic x-ray equipment in agreement with the Head of Radiological Physics and in line with the Head of the RSU. This requires high precision complex measurements, which could result in the restriction of clinical service.
• Fulfil the role of Medical Physics Expert for the Trust and key SLA customers.
• Carry out Critical Examination, Acceptance and Commissioning testing as delegated by RPA and troubleshooting of a large number of different complex x-ray imaging modalities, systems and associated software in the Trust and to SLA customers.
• Providing detailed reports on the results, making suggestions and giving advice or complex, highly specialised scientific information.
• Carry out environmental, staff and patient dose surveys as delegated by the RPA.
• Participate in procurement projects where appropriate.
• Provide highly specialised x-ray systems support and troubleshooting service to the Trust and for SLA customers.
• Provide specialist expertise in scientific, computing, image processing and software applications in support of the clinical use and development of diagnostic x-ray systems within the Trust and for SLA customers

Benefits include career development, flexible working and wellbeing, staff recognition scheme. Make use of optional benefits including Cycle to work, car lease schemes, season ticket loan or membership options for onsite leisure facilities.
