Summary


We are very excited to be recruiting for a new post: Principal Optometrist- lead for Core Services. This role would suit an experienced ( ideally 5+ years) , caring, passionate, patient focussed, hospital Optometrist who is keen to develop their clinical leadership skills as part of the newly established Senior Leadership Team in Optometry. The post holder will be able to deliver autonomously in all areas of core practice and would have a role in providing clinical services and supporting leadership in extended/ Ophthalmology roles.

The Optometry team has over 30 members and includes Optometrists, a Pre Registration Optometrist, Dispensing Opticians, ECLOs and Admin staff.

The Optometry service provides extensive core clinical services ( Low Vision, Medical Contact Lenses and Paediatrics) as well as being part of the multidisciplinary Ophthalmology Service where we support EED, Glaucoma, Paediatric and Medical Retina clinics.
• To deputise in specific areas for the Head of Optometry in her absence when required particularly in areas related in clinical expertise
• To work as part of the senior leadership team in Optometry to provide strategic direction.
• To provide a clinical lead in at least one of the major core services provided by the Department.
• To work closely with the Head of Optometry to personally deliver an extensive range of core and highly specialist/extended optometric services to the highest standards of quality and care.
• To work with the Head of optometry in the development of and review of policies and procedures relating to core services.
• To personally provide clinical support to all staff working in core optometry.
• To personally champion high standards of clinical practice
• To work closely with the Head of Optometry along with the Senior Leadership Team, a take delegated responsibility for the management of human resource issues relating to all staff levels (particularly but not exclusively the registered optometrists ) within the Department including appointment panels, appraisals, return to work interviews and wellbeing reviews.
• To take the lead for supervision on a case-by-case basis for the resident graduate pre-registration optometrist.
• To engage in and support the provision of teaching and training on relevant subjects to different staff groups.
• To undertake quality improvement projects and clinical audits as required by the Head of Optometry in area of expertise.



The Optometry Team are a multi- professional team made up of Optometrists, Dispensing Opticians, ECLOs, Administrative staff and a pre registration Optometrist. All team members work to provide and support high levels of clinical skill ensuring patients receive the best available care at all times. The Optometry Department is part of the Ophthalmology Directorate based the John Radcliffe Hospital which provides inclusive care for patients in our county and also tertiary level care in some areas. Oxford is a beautiful historic city with access to areas of outstanding natural beauty and easy transport links to London and the Midlands.
