doctor detailing any problems or difficulties likely to arise over the on call period.

Teaching:

The post holder will perform ward based teaching to the final year medical students.

Administration/Management:

Maintenance of patients' records, timely completion of discharge summaries and the

TRAINING AND RESEARCH

Aims of the Post:

The aims are to gain an understanding of the assessment and management of acute

oncological emergencies and management of common cancers. To this end

development of the core clinical skills of history taking and physical examination are

of prime importance. The trainee will also learn about symptom management, end

of life care and the importance of effective communication with patients and family

alike.

Technical Knowledge and Clinical Skills:

Acquire a practical experience and knowledge of the diagnosis and management of common cancers and their complications. Trainees should become proficient in:

• The management of acute oncological emergencies:

Decision making skills:

Acutely unwell patients with cancer often present complex management problems.

Newly admitted patients are reviewed on a consultant led post-take ward round

during which management decisions, investigation and treatment options are

reviewed, considered and set. The post-take round provides a learning opportunity

to actively develop decision making skills in the management of acutely unwell

cancer patients.

Communication Skills:

Effective communication is essential to the practice of oncology. Trainees will

develop skills in communication with patients, relatives and other professional

colleagues. It is cknowledged that many Health Service complaints result from poor

communication and considerable importance is attached to developing these skills

during training.

Facilities for Study and Training:

Good library facilities are available at the John Radcliffe hospital. There is an active
