A Vacancy at Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.

We are looking to appoint a Locum Consultant within the Cornea and External Eye Disease Services team to cover maternity leave for a period of 6-12 months. The post holder will join a team of 3 Adult Cornea Consultants and one consultant with a specialist interest in Paediatric Cornea. In addition, the service supports the training of a corneal fellow appointed annually and we support up to 3 Trainees on the North West Regional Training programme and intermittent TSC placements.

Applicants should have the Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists or equivalent. A higher degree is desirable but not essential. This is a 10 PA consultant contract and will include a general Ophthalmology on-call commitment.

Applicants must be eligible for full registration with the GMC at the time of appointment.

Applicants must have entry on the GMC Specialist Register via one of the following:

1) Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) (The proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of the interview)

2) Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) (CESR Candidates must have written GMC confirmation at the time of application)

Adult cornea services are provided by dedicated consultant-led clinics, Optometry-led virtual and face to face keratoconus clinics, supported by ophthalmic science practitioners, and all patients are risk stratified into the most appropriate patient pathway stream. There are daily surgical corneal sessions (including laser refractive surgery) delivered by the consultant team in Manchester Royal Eye Hospital Theatres and laser suite, as well as dedicated cataract service facilities at Withington Community Hospital.

Manchester Royal Eye Hospital Corneal Service has close associations with other related ophthalmic services at MREH, to include the Glaucoma service, Uveitis service and Vitreo-retinal service. It has an international reputation for clinical excellence and is one of the busiest units in the UK.

We also collaborate with colleagues across a variety of specialties within MFT to include Rheumatology, Haematology and Oral Medicine.

This role is to provide continuity of existing consultant services for Cornea and External Eye Diseases and General Ophthalmology in order to maintain the capacity of each department and to manage the volume of referrals into the Trust. The post holder will be expected to diagnose and manage the spectrum of Anterior segment conditions. It is expected that the post holder will contribute to the overall cataract commitment of the Trust and will be expected to continue overseeing the post-operative management of such as appropriate.
