Summary


As part of Moorfields' strategy to support the development of advanced practice (AP) and to deliver upon the vision set out in the NHS Long Term Workforce Plan, the post holder will be responsible for supporting all trainees undertaking AP programmes across all divisions of Moorfields Eye Hospital.

The 'Advanced Practice Clinical Supervisor' role, will work closely with the AP supervision leads and will deliver vital practical clinical supervision to our multi-professional trainees, across multiple Ophthalmic sub-specialties.

The majority of the AP trainees at Moorfields are apprentices, and therefore the clinical supervisor post will have the responsibility of ensuring the knowledge, skills and behaviours expected to be achieved throughout the AP apprenticeship are enabled and demonstrated, with the appropriate supervision provided.

The post holder will be expected to provide supervision, mainly supporting the the clinical pillar of advanced practice, however there will be opportunities to provide supervision for the research, leadership and education pillars.



Support all current AP trainees undertaking Advanced Practice education & training acting as clinical supervisor and ensuring each trainee AP is familiar with the requirement of AP.

Contribute towards the delivery of a competency based framework for nurses and allied professionals working at various levels of practice across multiple Ophthalmic sub-specialties at Moorfields

Contribute to the delivery of the 'Moorfields Supervision Programme for Nurses and Allied Professionals'

Support supervisors of advanced practitioners in their personal credentialing for AP

With the educational supervisors facilitate 1:1 educational plans supporting students on AP academic programmes.

Collaborate with programme leads of AP post graduate programmes to deliver AP education, including planning of student support, supervision and assessment

Promote standards of supervision that are delivered based on current evidence, best practice and, where applicable, validated research.

Contribute towards developing a network for ophthalmology APs both internally and externally

Supporting the community of practice (COP) for clinical supervision

Maintain and update their own professional clinical practice and knowledge of AP pillars.

AP is delivered by experienced, registered health and care practitioners. It is a level of practice characterised by a high degree of autonomy and complex decision making. This is underpinned by a master’s level award or equivalent that encompasses the four pillars of clinical practice, leadership and management, education and research, with demonstration of core capabilities and area specific clinical competence.

AP embodies the ability to manage clinical care in partnership with individuals, families and carers. It includes the analysis and synthesis of complex problems across a range of settings, enabling innovative solutions to enhance people’s experience and improve outcomes.

Purpose of Clinical Supervisor:
1. Contributing towards the progression of healthcare professionals along a training and/or professional development pathway with respect to acquisition of knowledge, clinical skills and competencies
2. Enhancement of general (clinical) and professional skills and attitudes
3. To help deliver, and support the provision of high-quality education and clinical placements and help ensure clinical experience, education and training are maximized for those working towards Advanced Practitioner status at the Trust
4. Ensuring both good patient experience and safety through specialist advice to learners and practitioners to enhance their skills and knowledge
5. Supervision can take on many varied forms including direct and indirect observation, critical challenge, preparing tutorials or pastoral support
6. Supporting the community of practice (COP) for clinical supervision
7. Analyse and implement a competency framework for nurses and allied professionals working at a various levels of practices across multiple sup-specialty Ophthalmic services.
