RELIGIOUS WORKER / HINDU PRIEST

Aberdeen Hindu Temple Trust, a registered charity, was incorporated in 2014 as an interface organisation for various Hindu organisations in Aberdeen such as Aberdeen Hindu Association, Indian Association of NE Scotland, Nepalese association, Brahmakumaris and many more. The primary purpose of this trust is to serve the spiritual needs of the Hindu religious people in Aberdeen.

The Trust operates the Aberdeen Hindu Temple located at (Old Stoneywood Church), Bankhead Road, Bucksburn, Aberdeen, AB21 9HQ and promotes religious, spiritual, cultural, educational, social, and humanitarian needs and commitments for the benefits of its members and community.

The Temple now requires a Hindu Priest / Religious Worker, who come from Traditional Indian Priestly order, must have undergone formal training under reputable and Govt approved Saiva/Vaishnava Hindu Organisation with qualification such as Saiva Agama pravara course/ Vaikanasam. Applicants must have extensive (more than previous 10 to 15 years of experience as qualified priest) proven experience, must be a strict vegetarian. Applicants must be male only and be of Hindu religion due to religious requirements. Preference given to applicants who are British Citizens and Permanent Residents.

Salary: £20,000 Annually
Employment terms: Full-time / Temporary
Hours of work: 33/week (split hours)
Required to work from Monday to Sunday, all seven days a week.

A minimum of ten years previous experience as a qualified Priest.
Certification and full training in Vedic and Agama (Karana and Kamiya Agamas) from an approved and reputed Hindu religious organization is essential.
Shall be trained and skilled in the rites and practices set out in the Kamika and Karana Agamas as observed in the Saivite Hindu tradition, including Homam and Kumba Abhishekam and Temple Poojas and rituals.
Expert in chanting Vedas and Upanishads.
Skillful in alankaram, making garlands and decoration of deities in various forms during temple functions and major festivals.
Trained / well-versed and adept in performing Vaidika Karyakramas including the jatakarma, namakarana, annaprasana and vidyarambha samskaras; the punniyaka vachanam and the varushabthikam, srartham and dharpana ceremonies.
Additional qualifications including Samaya Vishesha Deeksha and other are preferred.
Shall be able to communicate with the congregation in English. Spoken knowledge of Hindi and other Indian languages is desirable.
Conduct Hindu Temple rituals such as Abishekam, Homam, Alangaram to all deities, Officiating Weddings and special prayers for Family events.
Should recite Vedic Mantras and Slogas
Conduct religious ceremonies reflective of all auspicious days as per the Hindu calendar.
Recite Hindu religious songs and Bajan etc during the poojas (Prayers)
Perform Hindu Pooja and prayers regularly in and out of the premises.
Applicant is expected to teach the meanings of Hindu religion to the devotees and should also motivate and encourage the devotees to participate regularly in the temple activities.
Proven experience in making flower garland, decorating the deities, and preparing Holy foods for rituals offerings.
Maintain the sanctum.
Polishing of the metal deities using Temple Assistants/volunteers, disposal of all used flowers, arranging the deities’ clothing and Pooja items in the appropriate storage locations.
Report / Liaise with the Temple Administrator and chairperson of the Pooja Committee or other designated representative of the employer.
Offer counselling and welfare support to the faith members.
Provide religious education and discourse for children and adults.
Must assist our congregation in the achievement of their spiritual goals, to preach the Hindu doctrine and to perform religious prayers and ceremonies according to the Hindu Vedic way of life.
The applicant must provide the President, chairperson of the temple where they are assigned &/or their authorised designate with a list of all the religious events that should be performed throughout the year in the temples.
Applicant will need to provide documentation, which demonstrates his eligibility to work in UK.
Help in the maintenance of cleanliness of the temple and ground floor hall hire
Adhere to temple rules, processes, procedures, and policies.
Able to work independently, and guide assistant priest(s)/volunteers as required. Be of exemplary character befitting the position of the Priest in a Hindu Temple and should be vegetarian and abstain from alcohol, tobacco or other recreational substances.
