Summary


The Surgery & Anaesthetics Care Group runs General Surgical services in the two acute hospitals; Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital (Margate) and William Harvey Hospital (Ashford). The General Surgery Department has an active role in teaching undergraduate medical students on attachments from GKT, St George’s and Imperial Medical Schools. We are involved in offering undergraduate teaching to the new Medical School, Kent & Medway Medical School (KMMS) which started in September 2020.

We have an innovative Endoscopy Unit with excellent collaboration between the Gastroenterologists and General Surgeons.

Our team has a burgeoning research portfolio, including high-profile national studies. We work closely with other specialties and offer opportunities to combine specialisms.

Prior visit to the Department is cordially encouraged.

Communication: this will include responsibility for and arrangement of :- (i) communication and liaison with all other medical and service departments within the hospital including General Management, Medical Records, Social Work Department (ii) communication with general practitioners will include telephone discussion of problems and writing of letters about cases seen in the department (iii) communication with other hospitals and special departments in other hospitals.

Teaching: Junior doctors and medical students, nurses and other paramedical staff in the team in speciality and special interest. The post holder will be expected to become an integral member of the whole surgical team at the William Harvey Hospital.

It is expected that the post holder will take a keen interest in audit and assist with the preparation of the monthly audit meetings.
