Summary

Join us as a Legal Counsel

  • This is an excellent opportunity to join our collaborative and supportive Treasury, Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) & Disclosure Legal team as a Legal Counsel
  • You’ll deliver the legal strategy and provide expert legal advice on a wide range of legal issues relating to climate change and sustainability-related matters
  • You’ll come to be recognised as an expert in your field, and be exposed to stakeholders across the bank and externally
  • We're offering this role for a period of 9 months

What you'll do

As a Legal Counsel, you’ll be managing and coordinating the delivery of legal advice. You'll work closely with stakeholders and legal colleagues to ensure the timely, effective and efficient delivery of all issues, projects and initiatives, either directly or through a team.

Additionally, you’ll be:

  • Making sure that legal advice is readily understandable to non-lawyers, delivered within relevant timescales, and manages and minimises legal risks
  • Delivering continuous improvement in operating practices and processes, including identifying efficiencies, improvements and opportunities to reduce costs
  • Providing the communication of internal and external legal advice and helping to deliver transactions and projects to stakeholders in a commercial, user friendly and efficient manner
  • Managing legal costs through the use of e-billing, auctions and other tools, and driving a culture of disciplined cost management and controls

The skills you'll need

To join us in this role, you’ll need to be a qualified solicitor with experience of providing legal and commercial advice. It's crucial that you have experience of engaging on legal and regulatory developments around climate change and sustainability, with a focus on the UK climate and sustainability-related disclosures, managing greenwashing risk for the bank and sustainable finance. As well as this, you'll need proven experience of providing legal and commercial advice in relation to capital markets transactions and projects in-house or in a leading UK law firm.

It's also essential that you have in depth knowledge of general banking law and practice, and the financial services industry, coupled with the ability to establish and maintain strong relationships across the bank.

We’ll also be looking for you to demonstrate:

  • An understanding of climate and sustainability-related disclosure legal frameworks and market practice in Europe and, ideally, the US
  • An awareness of forms of sustainable finance and funding, especially green, sustainable or social funding
  • An awareness of human rights related legal and regulatory expectations and voluntary guidelines
  • Experience of working with leading law firms and other professional advisers and consultants
  • The ability to keep up to date with and share relevant legal and market developments
  • A commercial outlook with a collaborative and flexible working style, and the ability to deal with a range of stakeholders at all levels
