Summary


Here is an exciting opportunity to join our pathology team as a Medical Secretary.

You will work within a specific clinical area to facilitate the smooth running of the patient journey by ensuring that co-ordinated and streamlined administrative processes revolve around the patient and their individual needs.

Provide administrative and secretarial support to all clinical staff within the clinical area including Consultants and Junior Doctors.

Support the clinical team, operational managers and other divisional managers in ensuring the specialty are able to deliver safe and effective services covering all aspects of the provision, ensuring the delivery of high quality histology service.

Provide cross-cover for other Patient Pathway Co-ordinators to ensure a consistent and effective administration service is maintained at all times.

Supervise and support junior and fellow administrative members of the team and assistants within the relevant specialties as advised by the Office Manager, including general monitoring of performance and compliance with Trust, Divisional and Speciality standards.

Co-ordinate, monitor and initiate appropriate changes within adminstrative processes along the patient pathway to ensure the patient's journey is managed efficiently, smoothly and in accordance with targets and agreed timescales.

Working as part of a large administrative team to provide comprehensive support to the Consultant Histopathologists and wider clinical team along with technical staff within the department .

Undertake the typing of all reports, prioritising accordingly and supporting correspondence and composing of letters and other documentation as required ensuring the patients journey is processed in a timely efficient manner in line with Cancer waiting times targets.

To co-ordinate regular Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings, organising slides and reports, liaising with referral centers and other Trusts where necessary.

Utilise computerised tracking systems to progress patients through the cancer pathways and chase investigation results.

Liaise with teams outside of the Specialty e.g. referral laboratories and other Trusts where appropriate to ensure a seamless patient journey.

Working within a team to achieve agreed KPI's for example progression of patients on a 2 week wait (2ww) pathway as to not breach through Trust processes, SOP's and training.

Sending biopsy samples to other hospitals as appropriate to assist in gaining second opinions for diagnosis.

To provide a good secretarial service to the Consultant Histopathologists as well as providing support to the Clerical Administrator and Cancer Pathway Tracker such as sending blocks and slides to other Departments and Hospitals for referral or research and recording the information within the Computer system used.

To transcribe Histology and Cytology reports on the Pathology Computer system as well as transcribing Post Mortem reports for HM Coroner.

To assist the Clerical Administrator in preparing MDT lists and slides for the Consultants meetings in a timely manner.

To act as first point of contact for enquiries from medical and nursing staff both within the Hospital and the community.
