Summary


St Mary’s Hospital is one of four Major Trauma Centre’s (MTC’s) in the London region and is the only hospital with a dedicated Acute Imaging Centre containing a 256 slice CT scanner and 3T MRI scanner to supplement our 2 other CT and 4 MRI scanners.

In addition we have recently upgraded our digital angiography suites and have opened up a new Hybrid Vascular Theatre.
There has also been recent investment in new DR mobiles and a digital plate within A&E to complement the existing DR equipment.

We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated Radiographers who enjoy the challenges a MTC will offer within a friendly multidisciplinary team in a central London location.
You will need to have excellent communication skills and be able to cope with a very wide portfolio of services from Paediatrics and Major trauma through Interventional vascular, CT and MRI.
This post is based in the Main Imaging Department, however you will receive training in MRI to be competent to cover OOH MRI.

You will be expected to participate in standby and on call duties covering nights and weekends so a flexible approach is essential,

General responsibilities

Clinical
• To carry out radiographic examinations across a range of modalities to the agreed standard of the department.
• To maintain a high standard of patient care and comfort and be patient focused at all times.
• To work in an efficient and effective manner at all times.
• To appear on duty promptly and appropriately dressed and behave in a professional manner at all times.
• To plan, prioritise and organise own workload within certain clinical areas of the department, e.g. Fluoroscopy, with support from senior colleagues as required.
• To vet request forms for validity and appropriateness.
• To determine whether repeat X-rays or extra projections are required.
• To undertake IV injections in line with departmental policy.
• To report any untoward incidents and equipment failure to the area superintendent radiographer.
• To work unsupervised as and when required.
• To work using own initiative but be aware own limitations and seek guidance when necessary.
• To work flexibly based on requirements of service.
• To carry out duties that may be considered necessary and consistent with the responsibilities of the post.
• Commitment to active participation for the out of hours service and perform rostered duties as part of contractual hours.

Communication
• To liaise and communicate effectively with other staff both within and external to the department regarding patient care and ensure that effective communication is implemented and maintained.
• To keep accurate records of patient examinations in line with departmental protocols.
• To be familiar with the RIS departmental system and to ensure all examinations have been entered onto the system and post entered.

Management
• To be actively involved in the department audit and quality assurance programme.
• To deputise for more senior radiographers as and when required.
• To supervise junior members of staff and help expand their knowledge and skills

Training and development
• To undertake any formal or informal training required to fulfil the needs of the post.
• To expand and update your own technical and professional skills.
• To assist in the clinical instruction and assessment of student radiographers.
• To participate in the departmental appraisal system.
• To supervise other staff undertaking IV injections.
• To participate in and fully contribute to departmental and professional activities.
• To undertake all mandatory training in line with Trust and Department policies including
• Manual Handling, Infection Control and Trust Core skills.
• To undertake continuous professional development in line with College of Radiographers
and Health Professions Council guidelines.

Other Duties
• To participate in the rostered shift system inclusive of evening and weekend duties as part of 7 day working.
• To observe the “Code of Practice for the use of Ionising Radiations” and the IR(ME)R regulations.
• To be aware of and adhere to Trust, Directorate and Department policies.
• To maintain professional registration with the HCPC.
• To undertake any other duties commensurate with the grade as requested.
