Summary
Quality Improvement: To lead and support quality improvement projects within clinical teams To support the develop of and maintain the audit and quality improvement plan To undertake clinical audits To present findings of audits undertaken at identified groups and directorate meetings To ensure all quality improvement projects and audits are correctly registered with the audit department Work closely with the audit department to ensure audit tools are robust and include explicit criteria relevant to each audit To analyse the audit data and develop recommendations To understand all national initiatives and assist in the implementation in order to influence patient care and service delivery To be aware of and support local research projects as applicable Develop and maintain up to date IT systems and databases relevant to your role Clinical Effectiveness: Maintain accurate, up to date records of all maternity guidelines Co-ordinate the development and updating of all guidelines and patient information leaflets within the maternity footprint Ensure policies are in the correct format and follow the appropriate approval process Identify any gaps of non-compliance to the maternity guidelines from national standards Where agreed recommendations are made from clinical audit relevant guidance is updated and changes in practice are implemented To provide clinical and educational support for all levels of staff in the department Help deliver a varied and interesting mandatory training programme Understand national drivers influencing maternity education and how they apply to the SWFT maternity education programme Participate in the programme of cascade training to help foster a learning culture within the workplace and embed into practice Provide educational and project support in the clinical environment to all registered clinicians to help increase education of CTGs and peer reviewing Provide a resource for support for the Band 5 midwifery preceptor programme Support planning, developing and delivering the programme of work relating to the Maternity Information System throughout the Maternity Service To ensure and facilitate in meeting the training needs of student midwives by providing a suitable learning environment and by engaging in clinical teaching where appropriate Train staff in the use of relevant technologies as required and coach staff in the use of technology with clients/ parents Develop and update MIS lesson plans for all users alongside the training team Develop crib sheets for MIS users Identify any clinical benefits and financial saving opportunities that arise from MIS Manage user accounts ensuring the correct permissions are given Liaise with the IT department and infrastructure engineer Prepare draft reports and action plans for trust and local level committees as required To provide a visible, accessible and authoritative presence in the maternity unit to whom staff, patients and their families can turn to for assistance, advice and support To develop good working relationships with other ward / departments / agencies within and outside the Trust, ensuring that all stakeholders understand, respect and recognise the Trusts philosophy and operational policies Attend all meetings relevant to the post relating to governance Ensure and facilitate robust methods of evidence collection for CQC requirements Complete clinical midwifery shifts in all areas of maternity service when required. Clinical Risk: Assist the Maternity Governance Lead to investigate complaints, incidents and accidents and assist in their resolution and dissemination of learning outcomes Participate in serious investigations as required Co-ordinate systems and processes to ensure effective risk management Support clinical leads in risk assessments and reporting. Management: To assist in the recruitment and retention of staff ensuring all new staff receive induction/orientation and appropriate paperwork is completed Develop and maintain up to date IT systems and databases relevant to your role To understand new health care related developments ensuring that midwifery practice is evidence based, cost effective and regularly benchmarked against best practice To understand all national initiatives and assist in the implementation in order to influence patient care and service delivery To be aware of, and support, local research projects as applicable To undertake clinical midwifery cover, within the service when required To monitor and work within allocated resources To allocate and manage own time effectively, creating a balance between clinical and non-clinical duties working within project timescales Attend all meetings relevant to the post relating to quality improvement and governance, as an invited attendee or as delegated by the Maternity Governance Lead/Quality Improvement Lead to maintain effective channels of communication both within and external to the Trust To develop good working relationships with other ward / departments / agencies within and outside the Trust, ensuring that all stakeholders understand, respect and recognise the Trusts philosophy and operational policies Personal Attributes: To maintain confidentiality at all times. To provide clinical leadership, giving advice and support to staff as required and acting as patients advocate at all times. To ensure that all care programmes are accurately documented and that the standard of record keeping reflects the NMC and Trust guidelines for records and record keeping. To act as an autonomous practitioner Work as an independent practitioner within the multi-disciplinary team to promote the highest possible standards of care To maintain clinical credibility and competence in midwifery care
